Job Summary

Birmingham City Schools is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Therapeutic Special Education Teacher to join our team. As a Therapeutic Special Education Teacher, you will be responsible for creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment that fosters the academic, social, and emotional growth of students with special needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Implement Individualized Education Plans: Collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and other stakeholders to develop and implement individualized education plans that meet the unique needs of each student.
  • Provide Instruction and Support: Instruct students in a program of study that meets state standards and prepares them to master grade-level skills. Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
  • Establish a Positive Learning Environment: Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. Provide positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modify unacceptable behaviors.
  • Evaluate Student Progress: Evaluate the academic and social growth of students, prepare report cards, and keep accurate records of student progress.
  • Communicate with Parents and Guardians: Communicate regularly with parents and guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress.
  • Supervise and Monitor Student Movement: Supervise and monitor student movement and escort students to resources, bathrooms, buses, cafeteria, room changes, and other activities in the building.
  • Administer Standardized Testing: Administer standardized testing to assess student progress and inform instruction.
  • Model Nondiscriminatory Practices: Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities and ensure that all students have equal access to educational opportunities.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate.
  • Must meet Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA) federal and state requirements or a willingness to meet the requirements within the designated timeframe.
