Objective: The Safety and Environmental Compliance Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting operational activities by ensuring adherence to all Vesuvius health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards, as well as compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Interpret and apply regulatory standards and organizational policies to facility operations to guarantee compliance.
  • Formulate, execute, and evaluate HSE strategies and protocols, ensuring effective document management.
  • Conduct Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment: collaborate with teams to pinpoint hazards, evaluate risks, and determine appropriate controls to mitigate these risks to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).
  • Oversee that all mandated HSE inspections are carried out and recorded, covering areas such as waste management, environmental assessments, stormwater management, fire safety equipment, and general housekeeping, ensuring that corrective measures are taken for any identified issues.
  • Assist in conducting incident investigations, ensuring that root causes are determined and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Analyze safety concerns, audit findings, and other data sources to ensure prompt and effective corrective actions are taken.
  • Support the development and execution of a comprehensive HSE training program for all personnel.
  • Create visual management tools to showcase HSE initiatives and promote ongoing improvement.
  • Lead regular audits and evaluations to confirm that HSE procedures and practices are compliant and adhered to by the workforce.
  • Support the management of the facility's Learning and Training Team (LTT) program, including training, auditing, and procedural maintenance.
  • Assist in leading, training, and nurturing HSE teams and committees to enhance compliance and readiness for emergencies.
  • Compile data and aid in the preparation of essential HSE reports, including but not limited to: Tier II, TRI, Air Permit Evaluations, and various environmental and sustainability reports.
  • Support waste management efforts, including the preparation of waste profiles and manifests, ensuring timely waste shipments in line with the facility's waste generator status.
  • Maintain the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) management software.
  • Develop and oversee a SharePoint-based system for managing and responding to product stewardship inquiries from both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in the establishment and implementation of an environmental management system that complies with ISO 14001 standards and successfully passes regular external audits.
  • Develop and implement a contractor management system that aligns with Vesuvius and ISO 14001 standards.
Qualifications:
  • A four-year technical degree is preferred, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Formal training in OSHA, RCRA, GHS, and DOT regulations.
Experience: A minimum of 2 years of relevant HSE experience in a manufacturing setting.

Knowledge: Familiarity with OSHA and EPA regulations is essential, along with the ability to identify HSE risks and develop effective management practices.
