PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversees the daily functions of the laboratory department, providing leadership, expertise, and direction to team members. Manages clinical laboratory assessments, result evaluations, and testing proficiency.
- Ensures adherence to quality standards, regulatory requirements, and accreditation protocols. Maintains compliance with established policies, procedures, and decisions regarding standardization and consolidation.
- Facilitates staff meetings to address employee feedback, concerns, and service quality issues. Engages in relevant projects and committee work.
- Coordinates the orientation, training, and competency assessments for staff and students.
- Acts as a key resource for both internal and external stakeholders regarding laboratory services. Functions as the main communication conduit between the department and management.
- Assists management in the formulation, execution, and enhancement of laboratory policies, procedures, and operational processes.
- Implements and monitors quality indicators in line with the quality plan. Reviews laboratory outcomes for quality, accuracy, and validity, documenting and executing corrective actions as necessary.
- Establishes and oversees the preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment, directing necessary corrective measures. Keeps abreast of integrated computer systems relevant to laboratory operations.
- Serves as a technical resource for laboratory personnel, performing, assessing, and supervising clinical laboratory tests on biological samples as required.
- Handles human resources responsibilities for the team, including performance coaching, conducting evaluations, and fostering overall staff morale. Makes recommendations regarding hiring, compensation adjustments, promotions, corrective actions, and terminations.
- Responsible for understanding and upholding the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct, ensuring compliance with applicable policies, regulations, and laws by both personal actions and those of supervised employees.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).
- Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or a related scientific field.
- Typically requires a minimum of three years of experience in clinical laboratory testing and service provision, including experience in a leadership or senior staff role.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Leadership experience should encompass staff scheduling coordination, workflow management, and oversight of multiple laboratory functions.
- Familiarity with supply procurement and inventory management practices is essential.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently is necessary.
- Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office or similar software.
