Job Summary:


The Patient Care Support Technician plays a crucial role in assisting healthcare professionals in delivering patient care, including transporting patients and equipment, preparing and maintaining patient rooms, and managing supplies.

This role encompasses a variety of clerical, transcription, and maintenance tasks within the patient care unit. The Technician facilitates communication flow on the unit and operates under the guidance of professional nursing staff. Patient care assignments may vary based on unit needs and managerial discretion.

Job Expectations:

Assistance in Patient Care:

Aids professional caregivers in providing patient care, which includes support with personal hygiene, bathing, toileting, feeding, and monitoring patient conditions.


Transport:
Responsible for the safe transport of patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies as required.

Room and Equipment Management:
Prepares, cleans, and maintains patient rooms and equipment, ensuring readiness for use.

Communication and Coordination:

Facilitation:
Ensures effective communication on the patient care unit to enhance service coordination.

Telephone and Intercom:

Promptly responds to telephone and patient intercom inquiries, identifying self and unit, and relaying messages and requests efficiently and courteously.


Customer Service:

Delivers exceptional customer service by engaging with healthcare team members, patients, and the public to foster friendly and cooperative communication.


Scheduling and Documentation:

Test and Procedure Coordination:
Organizes tests, lab work, and other procedures, ensuring appropriate transport arrangements.

Electronic Health Records (EHR): Proficiently utilizes EHR systems to document and manage patient information.

Clerical Duties:

Performs clerical tasks, including assembling and maintaining patient charts, transcribing physician orders, and preparing charts for discharges and transfers.


Patient Care and Safety:

Basic Care:
Provides fundamental patient care, including personal hygiene, bathing, toileting, feeding, skin care, oral hygiene, and specimen collection/testing.

Monitoring:

Assists nursing staff in monitoring patient conditions and accurately recording vital data such as weights, input/output, vital signs, and blood glucose levels.


Patient Privacy and Safety:
Maintains patient privacy and safety at all times, promptly reporting any unusual findings to the registered nurse.

Supplies and Equipment:

Supply Management:
Orders and stocks individual patient supplies as directed and notifies relevant departments for equipment maintenance.

Cost Control:
Demonstrates awareness of cost containment and control standards.

Orientation and Training:

New Staff Orientation:
Participates in the orientation of new staff, including nursing personnel, physicians, and students, to the patient care unit.

Knowledge Sharing:

Shares knowledge of priority-based job responsibilities, hospital policies, and procedures, including patient confidentiality, safety/emergency protocols, and infection control.


Additional Responsibilities:

Room and Equipment Maintenance:
Cleans, sets up, and maintains patient rooms and equipment.

Documentation:
Completes documentation of tasks and patient care in accordance with established standards.

Orientation and Skills Evaluation:
Completes the orientation process and skills evaluation checklist in an objective and timely manner.

Qualifications:

Required:

Experience:

One of the following:
Successful completion of Fairview's OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program or another Fairview-sponsored Nursing Assistant program.

Six months of recent direct care experience in a long-term, home care, or acute care setting. Appropriate roles may include Nursing Assistant, PCA (Personal Care Assistant), Resident Assistant, or Emergency Room Technician.


Current enrollment in an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse), RN (Registered Nurse), or Nurse Practitioner program, with the completion of one semester of clinical rotation within the program.

Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire.

This requirement does not need to be maintained throughout employment and is not required if subsequently transferring into another Nursing Assistant, Nursing Station Tech, or Nursing Station Attendant position.


License/Certification/Registration:
Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification required.

OnTrack participants must be able to obtain Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.


This role is suitable for individuals who have completed relevant training programs, possess direct care experience, or are currently enrolled in nursing programs, with the necessary certifications to support their work in patient care and unit operations.
