Job Description

Under the direction of a manager or supervisor, the Clinical Laboratory Technologist III will work in the Blood Bank and be responsible for various tasks, including bench work, rotating weekends, inventory management, and other assigned duties required for smooth laboratory operations, patient safety, and optimal patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Follow laboratory pre-analytic and analytic procedures, maintaining records of tests and demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Perform patient testing and adhere to the laboratory's quality assurance procedures, including documenting all quality control activities, instrument and equipment verifications, maintenance, and preventive maintenance.
  • Follow standard precautions, laboratory safety/infection control protocols, and use appropriate PPE. Clean and decontaminate bench surfaces or equipment and document as necessary.
  • Receive, handle, and label specimens, ensuring integrity, transcribe requisitions/orders if required, print labels, separate and prioritize specimens for analysis, preservation, and storage, and distribute to other sections or reference laboratories as needed.
  • Ensure data integrity by generating, transforming, maintaining, and assuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency of data for a specimen, inclusive of all information collected and data generated to produce a test result.
  • Receive and issue blood and blood products, resolve discrepancies, request specimens from floors/units for further workup as required, and perform various tests, including ABO Grouping & Rh Typing, Direct Antiglobulin Testing, Antibody Screen Testing, Antibody Identification, Fetal Bleed Screen Testing, Antigen Typing, Antibody Elution, and Crossmatch Testing.
  • Review applicable test results daily for accuracy and reliability, accurately document in the Laboratory Information System, communicate and properly document critical laboratory values to providers, and escalate when necessary.
  • Comply with laboratory SOPs, patient confidentiality/safety/privacy, HIPAA, and PHI rules, and maintain standards of care, work on laboratory goals to prioritize patient safety and care, and respond to inquiries courteously and accurately in a timely manner.
  • Ensure adequate operating supplies, appropriate inventory management, specimen handling/management, monitor and document environmental conditions, physically inspect reagents/controls/calibrators or other supplies, check lot numbers and expiration dates, and document as necessary.
  • Troubleshoot problems and call facility services or vendor technical support when needed, assist in staff training/shadowing, actively participate in quality assurance and performance improvement processes, and work on pending lists, communicate pending and other tasks to fellow workers and supervisors as required.
Requirements
  • Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED.
  • One year of full-time paid experience as a technologist performing pertinent tests and analyses in a clinical laboratory as defined in Title V, Section 57 1 of the New York State Public Health Law.
