Position Overview:
This role is integral to the laboratory operations, focusing on executing all designated testing and reporting responsibilities within the assigned department. Collaboration is essential to achieve shared objectives and meet critical deadlines, ensuring high-quality service to patients and clients. This position embodies the core mission, vision, and values of Rush, adhering strictly to established policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Laboratory Testing: Conduct all laboratory analyses with precision, utilizing necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as mandated by the laboratory protocols. Ensure proper labeling and processing of specimens, executing all procedures efficiently with minimal oversight once trained.
- Quality Assurance: Implement required quality control (QC) measures and preventative maintenance for all testing procedures and equipment. Identify QC discrepancies and communicate issues to the appropriate supervisory personnel in accordance with established protocols.
- Troubleshooting: Address basic equipment and process issues independently, documenting actions taken and alerting relevant staff to any ongoing concerns.
- Work Area Management: Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment. Perform disinfection of the workspace at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Specimen Management: Ensure the acceptability of specimens, promptly notifying the necessary personnel regarding any that require re-collection.
- Time Management: Prioritize and organize workload to meet turnaround time expectations, regularly monitoring pending tasks to ensure timely processing.
- Continuing Education: Commit to ongoing professional development by obtaining and documenting a minimum of 12 hours of laboratory continuing education annually.
- Special Projects: Engage in method evaluations, new procedure development, and other special initiatives, completing tasks within agreed timelines.
- Supervisory Duties: Occasionally assume the responsibilities of the tech-in-charge, overseeing operations in alignment with departmental standards.
- Result Verification: Review laboratory results as necessary, ensuring accurate transcription into the Lab Information System and timely communication of critical findings.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in laboratory science, biological science, chemistry, or equivalent experience.
- Certification from a nationally recognized certifying agency is mandatory.
- Experience requirements vary based on educational background and certification.
Work Environment:
This position requires the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, often demanding, computerized laboratory setting. Physical requirements include the capacity to lift up to 20 lbs and perform repetitive tasks. Exposure to potentially infectious and hazardous materials is inherent to the role.
