Tucson Medical Center is seeking a skilled surgical physician assistant to support surgeons before, during, and after surgical procedures. The role involves preparing patients for surgery, monitoring vital signs, and overseeing the recovery process post-operation. The physician assistant will collaborate with a team of three surgeons and assist with approximately 50-55 surgical cases monthly, including specialized structural heart procedures such as TAVR in the catheterization lab.
Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of one year of experience as a physician assistant in an acute care setting, specifically in cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct patient examinations, prescribe medications, and order necessary diagnostic tests.
- Assist in discharge planning and educate patients on recovery expectations and health conditions.
- Order laboratory tests and imaging studies as per established protocols, ensuring timely review and action on results.
- Perform comprehensive physical examinations, including medical history and relevant family background.
- Execute urgent procedures such as IV or arterial line placements, chest tube insertions, and bronchoscopy in emergency situations, in consultation with the attending physician.
- Review scheduled patients weekly with physicians or surgeons to confirm thorough evaluations.
- Document all patient visits, including findings, treatment plans, and outcomes.
- Dictate medical histories and physical examinations in accordance with established standards.
- Maintain accurate medical records as provided by reference sources and supervising physicians.
- Consult with supervising physicians on complex patient care issues.
- Adhere to organizational policies, safety protocols, and confidentiality standards.
Operating Room Duties:
Assist surgeons in managing general surgical patients, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under supervision. Collaborate closely with the surgical team to ensure high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Serve as the first or second assistant during surgical procedures, which includes tasks such as opening and closing incisions, suctioning, tying, stapling, or suturing. Prepare radiological imaging equipment for procedures and operate imaging systems to provide optimal visualization for the surgical team. Conduct daily rounds on all patients, performing physical exams and reviewing laboratory results and medications, with thorough documentation.
Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, completion of an accredited nurse practitioner program, or an approved physician assistant program, or a combination of relevant education and experience.
Experience: Candidates must have experience in cardiothoracic surgery, with a preference for those with over one year of experience in endovenous or radial harvesting.
Licensure and Certification: A valid Physician Assistant license in Arizona, along with certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and DEA. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is also required.
