Job Summary and Qualifications

The Respiratory Care Specialist is responsible for coordinating and delivering high-quality, patient-centered respiratory care in alignment with departmental requirements and consistent with the scope and standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty.

As an essential member of the patient care team, the Respiratory Care Specialist conducts various diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures while monitoring patients receiving both invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation.


Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct and document patient assessments, including breath sounds, airway patency, and cuff pressure.
- Perform diagnostic procedures to assess the necessity for, and response to, respiratory therapy.
- Administer respiratory care therapies, such as oxygen delivery, aerosol medication delivery, and chest physiotherapy.
- Assist with the placement of artificial airways.
- Initiate, monitor, and maintain mechanical ventilation.
- Monitor patients for therapeutic responses and notify providers while intervening as necessary in case of unintended responses.
- Assist in the transportation of ventilator-dependent patients.
- Respond to emergency patient situations, ensuring airway integrity and adequate ventilation during resuscitation as required.

Qualifications:
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Degree in Respiratory Therapy - AAS or BS.
- Minimum of one year of critical care experience.
- Prior experience with mechanical ventilation, blood gas analysis, and oximetry.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Instructor certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
