The Sanitation Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the sanitation team in the food manufacturing plant. This role involves mentoring, training, and developing team members, ensuring sanitation compliance, and implementing company policies. The successful candidate will maintain a clean and sanitary environment, perform regular inspections, and ensure a safe working atmosphere. They will also be responsible for maximizing efficiency while meeting the highest standards of legislative compliance and company specifications.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise the sanitation team and ensure effective cleaning and sanitizing of the entire warehouse, production areas, offices, and equipment.
- Responsible for the safety, training, and development of employees in the effective use of chemical handling, disposal, and recordkeeping.
- Supervise, plan, schedule, organize, and direct sanitation activities, coordinating and tracking cleaning routines to meet company and/or USDA standards.
- Schedule staff based on production demand and work closely with the Operations Management and QA team to ensure sanitation goals are met, including efficiency, hours, and safety.
- Collaborate with senior management to set goals for the department and projects, planning and identifying resources needed to achieve targets and breaking requirements down into tasks.
- Demonstrate, follow, and enforce Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's), Food Safety, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) training, and company pre-requisite programs, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), and Standard Sanitation Operating Procedures (SSOP's).
- Maintain inventory of sanitation supplies, ensuring proper labeling of products, rotating stock as required, and ensuring all equipment is in safe and operating status.
- Address and correct any issues in a timely manner, schedule staff for proper sanitation before releasing areas to operations staff, and participate in USDA inspections and follow up on corrective actions.
- Ensure the department completes paperwork as necessary and in a timely manner, supervise and ensure the warehouse is cleaned on a regular basis, including waste disposal as necessary, and report food safety-related issues to the management team and QA as needed.
- Review company SSOP's and protocols that are in line with corporate values and interests, demonstrate good leadership practices, coach employees for improvements, evaluate performance, skills, and knowledge, schedule employee training, build trust and respect, diffuse conflict, promote and support a Safety Culture, and advocate for team members to work in a safe manner.
- Ensure timely reporting of injuries or near-miss accidents, complete investigations, and take immediate corrective actions when witnessing an unsafe practice, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities and recommending changes within their area of responsibility.
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent education.
- Certification in HACCP, Food Handling, Culinary Arts, or other related training or education is preferred.
- 2-3 years of experience in a food warehouse or fresh food manufacturing environment.
- 1 year or more experience applying HACCP and enforcing routine Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's) and in a food environment is essential.
- An understanding of foodborne illness and contamination.
- Knowledge of HACCP, Food Safety, USDA, GMP's, and Sanitation requirements in a food factory or warehouse environment.
- Excellent verbal communication skills; must work effectively with others.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Self-starter and able to work well in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
- Proficient computer skills and experience using Microsoft Suite applications, including Excel.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- A good understanding of English, bilingual (Spanish) speaking skills is helpful.
- Ability to supervise a diverse team of supervisors and team members with positive results and outcome.
- Knowledge of OSHA/CalOSHA safety requirements and expectations, First Aid/CPR, Food Hygiene, and HACCP.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability and initiative to multi-task throughout the day.
- Good understanding of all continuous improvement production techniques.
- Knowledge of large-scale food business start-up is helpful.
- Demonstrated ability to be a team player.
- Ability to motivate others to work routine and monotonous processes and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to work in a cold/damp environment and stand for extended periods.
While performing the duties of this job, it is primarily working in a chilled factory or warehouse environment with prolonged standing and walking. Regularly required to stand, walk, reach, grab, carry items, talk, or hear with frequent use of hands to finger, handle, lift, or feel. Regularly exposed to chilled temperatures.
