The Controls and Automation Specialist will play a crucial role in the automation, design, development, engineering, enhancement, and validation of innovative projects related to a cutting-edge plastics-to-fuel conversion process. This position necessitates a robust understanding of engineering principles and project management, alongside expertise in process controls and instrumentation, electrical power distribution, networking, and computing systems. A foundational knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, and chemistry is also essential, as well as proficiency in tools such as computer-aided design and project management software.

This role involves the development of systems to ensure accurate specification of instruments and control system components, conducting evaluations of existing process automation and designs, assisting in the creation of new processes and equipment, and formulating recommendations for enhancements. The specialist will also oversee vendors, subcontractors, and suppliers in the production of new systems. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, including operators, technicians, process managers, and finance personnel, is expected to conceptualize, implement, and monitor projects, solutions, and improvements.

Additionally, the Controls and Automation Specialist will troubleshoot instrumentation, control systems, networks, and electrical issues, proposing and executing improvements as necessary. Ensuring that designs and installations are safe, maintainable, and compliant with relevant standards and regulations is a critical aspect of this role.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide engineering support to enhance the reliability and efficiency of electrical equipment.
  • Develop systems for accurate specification of instruments and control system components.
  • Automate controls for innovative chemical process equipment.
  • Maintain and support the Control Network.
  • Assist with the start-up and commissioning of new facilities.
  • Conceptualize improvements to existing designs.
  • Lead electrical equipment root cause failure analysis and develop standard practices and procedures.
  • Stay informed about new technologies and solutions.
  • Identify potential enhancements in equipment and processes within the plastics-to-fuels conversion framework.
  • Assist with asset maintenance and outage planning.
  • Provide recommendations for equipment selection for new and existing systems.
  • Evaluate off-the-shelf and vendor solutions.
  • Analyze and offer recommendations based on electrical equipment testing reports.
  • Support operations in managing contract electrical equipment testing.
  • Analyze, track, and trend electrical testing data, making predictions and recommendations based on this information.
  • Design new systems and solutions as required.
  • Manage projects within established time and budget constraints.
  • Set and achieve goals and milestones independently.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with all staff and internal and external clients.
  • Prepare technical reports and deliver internal presentations.
  • Mentor and train other staff members.
Qualifications:
  • Degree in engineering or a related field, or extensive experience in controls within the Oil & Gas and chemicals sector or a similar industry.
  • Experience in project management.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in controls and automation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with troubleshooting electrical control systems, testing procedures, requirements, methodologies, and sequencing.
Salary Range:
$120,000 - $140,000, based on experience.
