Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Co-Generation Engineer II Operations to join our team at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. This is a critical role that requires a strong background in power plant operations, steam and electricity generation, and maintenance engineering.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise the operation of 13,000 volt main circuit breakers and the production of steam, electricity, and chilled water.
  • Lead a team of engineers through 12 hour shifts, meeting load demands, weather changes, equipment outages, and optimizing efficiency.
  • Coordinate with facilities operations and Mass Electric when switching incoming power lines and generation of electricity.
  • Operate and maintain 1100 psig heat recovery steam generator, two 1100 psig and two 250 psig steam boilers with super heaters, economizers, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Supervise and operate 7500 kw combustion turbine, 5000 kw and two 2500 kw steam turbine generators, condensers, condensing water pumps, and other related auxiliaries.
  • Monitor power demand and consumption, making required adjustments for power factor correction, frequency, and voltage.
  • Supervise and operate four electrical power systems, including the Uninterrupted Power System, the normal 13,800 volts power distribution system, the emergency power system, and the power generated by the power plant.
  • Oversee equipment start up and shutdown based on load response and weather conditions.
  • Monitor boiler emission controls and water chemistry.
  • Ensure safety standards compliance, including LOTO, Arc flash, PPE, and other relevant protocols.
  • Align Power Plant equipment according to ICETEC market dispatches.
  • Supervise fuel and ammonia unloading.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, cleaning, and repair of all power plant equipment and instrumentation.
Requirements
  • Must hold a Massachusetts Second Class Engineer's License or higher.
  • 2-4 years' experience in modern power plant operations, turbine generators, or steam driven chiller experience.
  • Possess the theory and application of good safety practices around high pressure, high voltage systems, and rotating equipment.
  • Possess theory, application, and experience in the operation of large condensing, extracting steam, and topping turbo-electric generating equipment, and related auxiliaries.
  • Possess the theory, application, and experience in the operation of a combustion turbine, heat recovery steam boiler, and gas compressor.
  • Possess the theory, application, and experience in the operation of maintenance of refrigeration and condensing steam turbine-driven centrifugal compressor, evaporators, condensers, and related equipment.
  • Possess the theory, application, and experience of large high pressure boilers equipped with super heaters, economizers, dual fuel systems, pneumatic combustion controls, and flame scanners.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
