About the Job

The Surgical Technician First Assistant will provide patient care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person's physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, sets up, and maintains the surgical field and assists the surgeon during operative procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs observable, technical behaviors (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective) as delegated by the surgeon.
  • Practices within boundaries set by state and federal regulation and/or licensure in a non-physician role.
  • Assists in providing safe positioning of patients under the direct supervision of the RN.
  • Assists in surgical case preparation (equipment, supplies, and instruments).
  • Collaborates with the surgeon to provide exposure of the field during operative procedures.
  • Anticipates and assists in providing hemostasis during operative procedures under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Performs closure of surgical incisions as directed by surgeon.
  • Selects and applies appropriate wound dressing.
  • Provides assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate of a Certified First Assistant (CFA) program through the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology (ARC-ST) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) preferred.
  • One of the following certifications is required: National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA), American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA), or National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical assisting (NBSTSA).
