Lead Endoscopy Technician

As a Lead Endoscopy Technician at Ohio Gastroenterology Group Inc, you will play a vital role in ensuring the proper care and maintenance of endoscopy equipment. Your responsibilities will include overseeing peer staff, preparing and cleaning rooms, and providing assistance to patients, physicians, and nursing staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for care and maintenance of equipment in the endoscopy center environment
- Follow infection control standards at all times
- Supports the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the endoscopy center
- Practices cost containment and proper, safe equipment operation
Major Activities and Essential Job Functions:
- Prepare rooms and assist with diagnostic/therapeutic endoscopic procedures
- Set up each procedure room prior to procedure and have appropriate equipment, instruments, and supplies available to use
- Responsible for care and maintenance of equipment, test equipment prior to procedure to ensure it is working properly, report equipment malfunction to nurse manager
- Properly clean and disinfect/sterilize accessories used during procedures
- Responsible for care, maintenance, and disinfection of endoscopic washer
- Prepare appropriate paperwork and endoscopes for repair
- Maintain equipment records
- Assist the physician and the staff nurse with endoscope procedures
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels and assist with ordering
- Secure and restock rooms with supplies/accessories
- Clean and restock procedure rooms and carts
- Provide patient care pre and post procedure under the supervision of the registered nurse
- May gather initial patient information, questions such as current complaint, known allergies, may help patient dress and undress, may take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure), applies pulse oximeter to patient and may monitor pulse and respirations after procedures; assist with patient discharge as directed
- Adhere to infection control principles and apply universal precautions according to hospital and departmental standards
- Assist with department communications; receive calls from physician offices and others for scheduling, interact in a positive manner with patients and families explaining delays and refer questions, concerns, scheduling conflicts, to nurse manager
- Keep nurse manager updated at all times
- Function as a liaison between patients/families, nursing staff, physicians, other physician offices, or other centers
- Order supplies as needed
- Cross train with receptionist/medical records position as designated, including using eCW scheduler
- May work with EMR (electronic medical records) including accessing the electronic chart, documenting, scanning, etc.
- Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned
Additional Lead Job Requirements:
- Coordinate and assign weekly tech assignments in center and communicate schedule to the Charge Nurse
- Responsible for all equipment issues which includes alerting Charge Nurse, calling appropriate vendor for trouble shooting and scheduling work requests as directed
- Ensure technicians rotate breaks and leave at scheduled time. All hours including overtime are approved by Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager only
- Notify Charge Nurse for any concerns with staff or equipment
- Train/orient new staff, sign off on competency test
- Monitor supplies, anticipate needs and order accordingly
- Act as a positive, professional role model for peers
- Work with other scope techs in rotation of assignments
- Maintain infection control policies within the scope area/center
Position Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High School graduate or equivalent G.E.D.
- Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant Program preferred
- Current BLS certification
- Speaks fluent English
- Participates in educational modules as assigned by Nurse Manager
- Minimum of 1 year of scope tech experience showing expertise in reprocessing and trouble shooting
- Ability to interact with all levels of staff
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to communicate with diversified levels of patients, staff members, and management
- Knowledge of modern office procedures and methods including telephone communication, office systems, and record keeping
- Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives
- Ability to organize work material and/or charts to ensure accuracy of patient records
- Ability to handle and resolve problems
- Neat appearance and a professional demeanor
Regulatory Requirements/Risks/Exposures:
- Works with chemicals including, but not limited to, chlorine bleach, glutaraldehyde, and formalin
- Physical demand requirement meets those define as HEAVY work, exerting 50 – 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 – 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 1 – 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
