Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Horticulture Tech to join our team at the University of Denver. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing skilled or technical types of work associated with the maintenance of lawns, fertilization, irrigation, trees, shrubs, and flower beds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lay sod, plant new shrubs, trees, and flowers, and ensure the grounds are well-manicured and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Operate equipment to spray, fertilize, and aerate lawn areas, and maintain a safe and healthy environment for the campus community.
  • Operate power lawn mowers and tractors for cutting grass, and ensure that all equipment is properly maintained and serviced.
  • Operate trucks, tractors, and other machinery in the routine care of all grounds, and transport materials and equipment as needed.
  • Pick up, collect, and remove litter and debris from all ground areas, and maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Perform minor repairs, lubricate, and sharpen equipment, and report complex repair needs to the supervisor.
  • Install signs, remove trees, and perform landscape installation, and ensure that all work is completed to a high standard.
  • Drive to sites with tools and equipment, and transport personnel and materials as needed.
Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required, and four years of experience in grounds horticulture, landscaping, or grounds maintenance is preferred.
  • A current State of Colorado chemical applicators license is required, and the ability to operate equipment such as backhoes, skid loaders, dump trucks, and snowplows is essential.
  • The ability to read and interpret landscape drawings from blueprints, and to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities is also required.
  • A valid Colorado driver's license and insurability by the University of Denver's insurance carrier are also required.
Working Environment

The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities, and will be required to work in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, and in high, precarious places.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, and the employee must be able to withstand long periods of time bending, couching, sitting, standing, reaching, and repetitive motions with the hand-wrist and elbow-shoulder.

The employee must also be able to work outside in all types of weather and lift, move, and carry objects in excess of 100 pounds.
