Position Overview:
Denver Botanic Gardens is currently looking for a Seasonal Urban Agriculture Production Support Specialist within our Horticulture Department. This role involves assisting the urban food team by applying suitable horticultural techniques to a diverse range of plant materials, ensuring that our gardens meet the highest horticultural standards. Travel between various farm locations will be necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement crop strategies for designated urban farm locations.
- Maintain accurate records and report on harvest data.
- Lead volunteer sessions with a variety of community groups.
- Utilize appropriate horticultural methods in assigned areas.
- Complete various tasks as needed, including weeding, watering, planting, harvesting, and managing farm stands.
- Employ integrated pest management strategies to address plant health issues.
- Keep pathways, beds, and communal areas clear of weeds and debris.
- Provide courteous and accurate responses to inquiries.
- Engage positively with community members surrounding the urban farms.
- Communicate effectively with management regarding daily operations.
- Participate in special events as required, including setup and cleanup duties.
- Foster positive working relationships with managers, colleagues, volunteers, and others.
- Maintain a helpful and solution-oriented attitude when interacting with visitors.
- Adhere to safety protocols at all times.
- Assist with snow removal when necessary.
- Regular attendance at the worksite is expected, with remote work options at management's discretion.
- All employees are expected to support the mission of connecting people with plants, particularly those from the Rocky Mountain region and similar global areas.
Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of horticultural practices and experience in routine garden maintenance.
- Familiarity with planting techniques, weed identification, and control methods.
- Knowledge of the cultural needs of herbaceous and woody plants.
- Proficiency with various horticultural tools and machinery.
- Ability to resolve issues by applying established rules and procedures.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Capacity to remain composed under pressure and manage stressful situations.
- Flexibility to adapt plans as necessary throughout the day.
- Willingness to work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
- Ability to work overtime as required.
- Must represent the Gardens positively at all times.
- Commitment to collaboration and respect in interactions with colleagues and the public.
- Dedication to maintaining a safe working environment.
- Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience from a college or technical institution.
- Experience in urban farming and/or food crop production is essential.
Up to 10% travel may be required, necessitating the ability to reach remote locations where conditions may vary significantly.
