Unit Mission Statement: The Marine Operations Department is committed to ensuring safe access to marine environments while supporting user needs.
Position Overview: The Relief Research Vessel Chief Mate is responsible for serving as the Chief Mate on the R/V Virginia, ensuring adherence to maritime regulations and institutional policies. Key responsibilities include operating the vessel, supervising maintenance tasks, and facilitating scientific objectives.
- Safely operates the R/V Virginia and oversees vessel operations.
- Manages maintenance of deck and safety apparatus.
- Engages in vessel readiness and sampling operations.
- Collaborates with scientific teams to achieve mission objectives.
- Contributes to vessel upkeep and cleanliness.
Employment Conditions: This role is non-exempt and may require overtime and after-hours work.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
Essential Qualifications:
- Possession of a 500 ton or greater near-coastal Mates license.
- Valid TWIC and STCW credentials.
- Radar endorsement required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong communication skills are essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1600 ton Master near-coastal license preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in a marine-related discipline.
- Experience aboard research vessels or within the fishing sector.
Remote Work Eligibility: This position is not eligible for remote work.
Compensation: Up to $38.00 per hour.
University Salary Range: U09
