Key Responsibilities:
Deliver Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

MNT encompasses assessment, nutrition diagnosis, and intervention to optimize patient care.


Collaborate with physicians and healthcare professionals to formulate a nutrition strategy utilizing the Nutrition Care Process for the best outcomes.

Document the care process accurately in medical records.

Conduct initial assessments, consultations, and follow-ups in accordance with established policies.

Serve as a resource for MNT knowledge to other staff and the community.

Employ effective time management skills to organize workloads, prioritize tasks, and achieve objectives.

Identify issues, gather data, and implement corrective measures for quality improvement initiatives.

May mentor Emory Dietetic Interns under the guidance of a Level II or higher dietitian.

Engage in community presentations on nutrition topics to local organizations, civic groups, and media outlets.


Verify diet orders, assess their appropriateness, and manage or modify diet prescriptions for oral, enteral, and/or parenteral nutrition; may draft diet prescriptions and document any modifications in medical records.

Develop and execute nutrition care plans, monitoring progress in relation to patients' medical conditions. Ensure the incorporation of cultural, religious, and ethnic preferences or medical requirements in collaboration with Food and Nutrition Services (FNS).

Maintain and apply thorough knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.

Act as a resource for FNS staff; may assess and recommend nutritional products and supplies.

Provide nutrition counseling to patients and their caregivers based on identified needs.

Utilize available educational materials effectively.

May participate in hospital-wide committees related to FNS.

Assess, develop, implement, and evaluate nutrition care plans for patients using the Nutrition Care Process.

Ensure MNT is performed and documented in compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), CMS, and hospital protocols.

Deliver care with minimal supervision from a Level II, III, or IV Dietitian.

Ensure continuity of care through informed decision-making that results in high-quality patient care.

Participate in medical rounds, discharge planning, and patient care conferences as appropriate for the clinical assignment.

Provide nutrition counseling to patients and caregivers based on identified needs.

Collaborate with FNS and healthcare team members to ensure efficient, quality patient care.


Utilize patient education materials that reflect current information consistent with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics guidelines and evidence-based practices.

Utilize computers and various software applications effectively.

May create written educational materials for patients.

Regularly conduct physical assessments on patients.

Identify and provide nutrition diagnoses and interventions for malnutrition.

May mentor dietetic interns in accordance with CDR and Emory standards.

Initiate the development of a Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) portfolio to showcase professional and career objectives.

Maintain licensure and registration by engaging in continuing education activities.

Attend nutrition seminars and teleconferences at both the system and local levels.

May participate in activities and events organized by local, state, and national dietetics organizations.

Complete annual compliance units punctually.


Seek guidance and expertise from peers and relevant medical personnel to enhance professional knowledge for the application of Medical Nutrition Therapy.

Complete an average of 15 nutrition-related continuing education units each year.

Serve as a nutrition resource for physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals.

Communicate and clarify nutrition information to other staff during physician rounds or patient care conferences.

May take part in nutrition-related hospital events such as National Nutrition Month.

May develop written materials intended for the benefit of staff.

Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in food and nutrition or dietetics.

Licensed as a dietitian in the state of Georgia, or eligible for licensure.

Entry-level Registered Dietitian position.

Competent in adult and geriatric nutrition.

Proficient in basic computer skills.


If the employee does not currently possess registration and/or licensure, they must obtain it within two months of hire.
