Position Summary

The Extrusion Machine Operator is responsible for the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of extrusion machinery that transforms polypropylene pellets into log form. A comprehensive understanding of both product construction and machine functionality is essential to optimize production yields and equipment availability.

This role involves working 12-hour shifts on a rotating schedule from 4:00 PM to 4:00 AM.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to all Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) protocols, including maintaining cleanliness standards.
  • Engage in EHS meetings, investigations, and audits.
  • Proactively identify and communicate safety concerns.
  • Set up and oversee machine operations in accordance with established standard operating procedures.
  • Understand and meet departmental safety, quality, and regulatory standards while striving to achieve production objectives.
  • Inspect raw materials and finished products for visual defects and take corrective measures as necessary.
  • Conduct checks to ensure compliance with product specifications, maintaining accurate logs for quality traceability.
  • Manage material disposition for all work-in-process components as assigned.
  • Make advanced machine adjustments to ensure adherence to construction specifications.
  • Temporarily halt machine operations to resolve operational issues.
  • Minimize non-conforming product production by promptly addressing issues using troubleshooting and mechanical skills.
  • Accurately measure work in process and finished goods.
  • Communicate technical challenges effectively to all relevant personnel.
  • Assist in the training of fellow operators.
  • Support maintenance efforts by performing regular preventive tasks.
  • Diagnose and rectify equipment malfunctions.
  • Execute complete setup, adjustments, startup, and shutdown of all machinery in the designated area.
  • Maintain precise records and clarify any discrepancies as needed.
  • Carry out additional tasks as directed by supervisors or team leads.
Qualifications:
  • At least 6 months of experience as a machine operator, maintenance technician, or relevant military service -OR- an Associate's Degree in a related discipline.
  • Willingness to work a rotating 12-hour schedule, including weekend shifts as required.
  • Availability for overtime work as needed.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and gloves, as mandated.
  • Preferred qualifications include:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience with computer applications, particularly basic functions in Excel.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including the ability to calculate flow rates and measure dimensions.
  • Experience in developing work instructions and operating manuals.
  • Basic familiarity with SAP systems.
  • Mechanical aptitude and quality inspection experience.
  • Attention to detail and strong communication skills.
  • Experience in lean manufacturing practices.
  • Prior experience in setup, troubleshooting, and operation of automated machinery.
  • Knowledge of Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) safety procedures.
