Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanic II to join our team at Hampton Roads Transit. As a Mechanic II, you will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing complex vehicle malfunctions, performing preventive maintenance, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our fleet.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle malfunctions using advanced diagnostic equipment
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and repairs
  • Ensure the timely and effective repair of any problems identified in the course of maintenance activities
  • Maintain and demonstrate a high level of proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing vehicle fuel delivery systems, air conditioning units, and wheelchair lifts
  • Repair and overhaul brake systems, steering and suspension systems, and multiplex systems
  • Diagnose and repair door system problems and make needed repairs and adjustments
  • Apply proper technique in the repair of plastic and fiberglass materials
  • Road test vehicles to ensure safety and quality of work performed
  • Use maintenance documentation and online services
  • Adhere to the highest quality standards and meet or exceed the original equipment manufacturers' requirements
Requirements
  • High school diploma/GED required; trade school preferred
  • Five (5) years of heavy-duty mechanical experience within the past ten (10) years or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficiency in the diagnosis and repair of all HRT vehicles and ability to read/comprehend written and electronic service information
  • CDL Class B license and/or CDL Permit and the ability to acquire within sixty (60) days of employment a valid Virginia CDL Class B license with air brake and passenger endorsements
  • EPA Section 609 Refrigerant Recycling and Recovery Certification

Must be able to lift eighty (80) lbs. and capable of prolonged periods of standing, walking, squatting, twisting, and reaching. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and on all work shifts including weekends and holidays.
