Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Mechanic I to join our team at Hampton Roads Transit. As a Mechanic I, you will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing various types of transit and support vehicles, ensuring they are safe and reliable for our passengers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle malfunctions, perform preventive maintenance, and overhaul various types of transit and support vehicles.
  • Ensure accurate diagnosis and effective repair of components necessary for proper vehicle functioning using advanced diagnostic equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and ensure timely and effective repair of any problems identified.
  • Maintain and demonstrate proficiency in troubleshooting and repair of vehicle fuel delivery systems, engines, and transmissions.
  • Repair and inspect air conditioning units and wheelchair lifts, as well as troubleshoot vehicle electronic systems.
  • Repair and adjust steering and suspension systems, test and repair electrical, electronic, and lighting systems, and repair brake systems.
  • Diagnose and repair hybrid systems, transmission, and driveline systems, and road test vehicles to ensure safety and quality of work performed.
  • Mix and apply base coat clear coat finish to vehicles and sub-assemblies, and demonstrate proper burning and welding techniques.
  • Use maintenance documentation and online services, adhere to quality standards, and meet or exceed original equipment manufacturers' requirements.
  • Advise supervisors of additional work needed, repairs that cannot be completed within promised time frames, or if work outlined is not needed.
  • Operate a forklift and perform other maintenance duties or assignments as requested.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school preferred.
  • Five years of heavy-duty mechanical experience within the past ten years or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing all HRT vehicles and ability to read and comprehend written and electronic service information.
  • Completed Employee qualification requirements for the Mechanic II position prior to moving to the Mechanic I classification.
  • CDL Class B license and/or CDL Permit and ability to acquire a valid Virginia CDL Class B license with air brake and passenger endorsements within sixty days of employment.
  • EPA Section 609 Refrigerant Recycling and Recovery Certification within the probation period.
Working Conditions

This position is classified as essential personnel and as Safety-Sensitive. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and on all work shifts, including weekends and holidays. Hampton Roads Transit is a 24/7/365 operation, and incumbents in this position will be required to work variable shifts as assigned.

Overtime is mandatory for this position. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
