Core Responsibilities:

This initiative necessitates the engagement of marine turtle conservation specialists to enforce protective strategies around nesting habitats of marine turtles during coastal construction projects. The specialist will collaborate with beach nourishment efforts, conducting thorough surveys to monitor any nocturnal nesting activities.

Key Duties:

  • Oversee a specified region for marine turtle species, dedicating up to 11 hours daily, 7 days a week.
  • Identify various marine turtle species and their nesting behaviors and locations.
  • Record the location of nests and coordinate with regulatory bodies to assess the need for nest relocation.
  • Document behaviors and other critical data, including the installation of predator deterrents around identified nesting sites.
  • Maintain organized logs of collected data.
  • Conduct nightly surveys of the designated area for marine turtles, working up to 10 hours per night.
  • Perform personal quality assurance checks on the data gathered.
  • Participate in daily meetings related to health, safety, and project updates as required.

Compensation: The hourly wage will be determined through negotiation. Both full-time and part-time permanent positions are available. A comprehensive benefits package is offered, including health and dental insurance, vacation, sick leave, and holiday benefits.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Current STCW Basic Safety Training (BST), GWO, or BOSIET certification completed within the last two years.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences.
  • Certification from a physician confirming fitness for work, including:
    • No susceptibility to chronic motion sickness.
    • Ability to reside in confined spaces.
    • Capacity to manage stress effectively.
    • Ability to lift items weighing up to 30 pounds.
    • Capability to vigilantly monitor the beach for 8 hours daily.
  • Completion of an approved Protected Species Observer (PSO) training course with certification.
  • NMFS-approved PSO status (proof required).
  • No affiliations that could compromise objectivity.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.
