Position Overview:

TRC is a consultancy specializing in engineering and environmental solutions, delivering advanced energy, decarbonization, and resilience strategies across the nation.

The Research and Consulting (R&C) division, part of our Advanced Energy practice, is dedicated to creating and implementing decarbonization and energy efficiency strategies for our clientele, which includes utilities, non-profit organizations, local governments, and state and federal agencies.

Our work encompasses policy research, technological studies, building code formulation, program management, market evaluations, and engineering assessments.


The R&C team is looking for a qualified professional to join our experienced group of building simulation analysts and researchers focused on developing energy codes, decarbonization policies, and the adoption of emerging technologies.


Each project presents unique challenges, providing exposure to a variety of tasks within a fast-paced, collaborative team setting.

Projects will involve the analysis of energy efficiency, responsive building designs, decarbonization efforts, distributed energy resources, human factors, and control systems.

You will conceptualize and execute research and simulation strategies while fostering a culture that promotes career advancement for building simulation personnel.

Candidates should possess technical expertise in building simulation and a solid understanding of building science and systems.

The ideal candidate will be a building scientist or engineer with four to seven (4-7) years of experience in building simulation analysis, which may include graduate-level research.

We seek an assertive, personable self-starter capable of managing multiple tasks across various teams.


Key Responsibilities:
Primary Duties (75%)


This technical role involves the development and delivery of a wide range of energy simulation studies, in close collaboration with a team of energy simulation analysts.


Specific Responsibilities Include:
Supporting the creation and upkeep of building simulation and analysis frameworks.

Formulating and executing simulation and research plans for projects under managerial guidance.

Conducting technical analyses to support the development of policy solutions, including building energy codes and local regulations.

Assisting in troubleshooting and devising solutions for complex energy simulation issues.

Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to advocate for best practices and technical execution in building simulation.

Performing quality control reviews of peer and junior staff work.

Translating findings into actionable recommendations and communicating them through written reports and visual presentations.

Facilitating meetings and presentations.

Mentoring and Oversight Duties (25%)

Specific Responsibilities Include:
Providing coordination, guidance, and training to building simulation analysts as necessary to ensure successful project outcomes.

Reviewing teammates' work to ensure quality and precision.

Staying updated on energy issues and industry trends through technical literature and participation in professional organizations at local and national levels.

Contributing to the development of internal energy simulation workflows, documentation, and training materials.

Assisting in creating and facilitating developmental opportunities for junior staff members.

Qualifications:
Requirements

A degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, Physics, or a related field.

A minimum of four (4) years of experience in building simulation analysis (including graduate research experience). More experience is preferred.

Proven knowledge of building science and systems, including envelope, HVAC, domestic hot water, and control systems.

Understanding of the fundamentals of building simulation engines and their underlying algorithms.

Demonstrated proficiency with at least one simulation engine (Energy Plus required).

Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, work independently and collaboratively, and communicate effectively.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

A history of working with clients to convey research methodologies and findings.

Desired Skills and Experience

Familiarity with energy codes (CA Title 24, ASHRAE 90.1, ICC, etc.).

Experience with various building simulation engines, user interfaces, and third-party tools for optimization and parametric analysis.

Experience in large-scale parametric building simulation using Ruby or Python.

Experience independently developing research plans and executing studies related to building energy use, particularly through building energy simulation.

Experience with California compliance tools, CBECC, CBECC-RES.

Practical experience in the building industry, such as design engineering, product development, construction, or energy consulting.
