Overview:

The Healthcare Billing Specialist is accountable for the precise collection and documentation of payments received for medical services provided. This role may involve verifying insurance information.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exceeds expectations of the relevant OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Ensures accurate processing of charge tickets as patients leave the facility.
  • Reviews and codes tickets for precision and completeness, determines applicable fees for services rendered, calculates totals, collects the correct amount from patients, and accurately records information.
  • Maintains appropriate cash levels; balances cash drawer according to company protocols; reconciles daily coding input with actual cash or deposits.
  • May be tasked with entering charge information, including hospital or other satellite services, into an online entry system.
  • Collaborates with other staff to follow up on accounts until they are settled or referred for collection, adhering to the guidelines of the collections policies.
  • Directs patients to a supervisor or Accounts Receivable representative for clarification or discussion of account and/or payment terms, in line with the collections policy.
  • Operates and maintains credit and collection equipment, ensuring adequate supplies inventory.
  • Assists with coding and resolving discrepancies.
  • Provides patient education regarding insurance plans.
  • May manage files containing referral slips, insurance documentation, and waivers.
  • May assist in the referral process.
  • Adheres to CHRISTUS guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), aimed at preventing or detecting unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Utilizes effective oral and written communication skills to convey ideas clearly and positively, consistent with the CHRISTUS Mission.
  • Follows established CHRISTUS policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Implements job responsibilities in alignment with the CHRISTUS Mission and Code of Ethics, supporting CHRISTUS cultural diversity objectives.
  • Supports and adheres to the CHRISTUS Service Guarantee.
  • Operates telephone, computer, copier, fax machine, and 10-key calculators proficiently.
  • Possesses strong mathematical and communication skills.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of one year of billing experience, including ICD9, CPT, and HCPCS coding in a healthcare setting is required.

Work Schedule:

8AM - 5PM, Monday to Friday

Full-Time
