Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a clean and organized bakery environment, adhering to all health and safety regulations.
  • Assist in receiving and unloading merchandise, verifying inventory and checking products for quality and condition.
  • Rotate bakery ingredients and merchandise according to store policy, ensuring that products are used in a timely manner.
  • Take stock to storage or shelf areas, reducing out-of-code merchandise daily to maintain department image.
  • Wrap, package, and price products accurately and legibly, adhering to established department procedures.
  • Answer phones and take special orders, greeting customers and providing excellent customer service.
  • Control excessive use of utilities and water, observing sound conservation practices.
  • Maintain general housekeeping and a regular cleaning program, meeting department standards and local health regulations.
  • Check refrigeration equipment for proper performance, using and maintaining equipment in an orderly manner.
  • Secure registers prior to leaving a register unattended, protecting company assets at all times.
  • Observe shift operating hours, keeping manager or other designated personnel informed of low inventory conditions or excessive spoilage problems.
  • Adhere to all local, state, and federal health and civil code regulations, performing any other work-related duties as assigned.

Requirements and Conditions:

  • High school education or equivalent preferred, with a minimum of one year experience in full bakery operations and procedures.
  • Health department training required, with the ability to calculate figures and amounts, and accurately complete required reports.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand the English language effectively, with knowledge of various types of products carried in the department.
  • Ability to handle special orders, including calculating proper price adjustments, and be thoroughly knowledgeable in baking tasks, safety, and health considerations.
  • Pass a standard drug test and qualify as being drug-free under the legal and medical guidelines permitted by the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions:

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, and use hands to handle, finger, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Occasionally exert or lift up to 50 pounds, carrying bulk containers of flour, sugar, lard, and other materials.
  • Successful performance requires specific vision abilities, including close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to climb a ladder to retrieve inaccessible items from overhead or elevated storage shelves and racks.
  • Ability to work with bakery ingredients and spices, including finely powdered substances, meat products, and produce.
