Defend the Nation as a PhD Researcher

As a PhD researcher at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, you will play a crucial role in developing innovative solutions to protect the United States and its allies from air and missile threats.
With a strong background in electrical engineering, engineering physics, physics, or mathematics, you will apply your knowledge to model and analyze complex systems, identify defensive systems gaps, and develop new concepts to revolutionize defensive capabilities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Contributing to the development and assessment of Missile Defense systems
- Modeling, analyzing, and performing assessments of fielded systems and identifying opportunities for improvement
- Developing innovative concepts and algorithms to improve capabilities and conducting analysis to assess potential future systems performance
- Communicating technical recommendations to APL leadership, government sponsors, and the engineering community through effective presentations
- Participating in a dynamic group culture that upholds core values through collaborative teams and activities, continual improvement, innovation, and risk-taking, and developing high-quality products
Qualifications:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, Mathematics, or similar program
- Strong programming and analysis skills, technical writing and presentation skills, and fundamental math and physics knowledge
- Proficiency in using MATLAB for analysis, algorithm development, and data visualization
- Ability to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by start date and ultimately obtain Top Secret level clearance
Preferred qualifications include direct experience with or domain knowledge of Navy, Missile Defense Agency, or Space Force systems, and a final Secret or Top Secret clearance.
