Work for Indiana
Begin a rewarding career with the State of Indiana, one of the largest employers in the region, offering a wide array of opportunities across numerous agencies. Here, you will discover competitive salaries, an extensive benefits package, and a strong commitment to maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to make a tangible and significant difference in the lives of residents throughout Indiana.
At the State of Indiana, we prioritize diversity and inclusion, striving to cultivate a welcoming, accessible, and equitable workplace that reflects the demographics of Indiana's population. As a proud equal opportunity employer, we provide reasonable accommodations to assist individuals with disabilities in completing the application and interview processes, as well as in performing essential job functions.
About the Department of Child Services:
Become part of a dedicated team that works with families and children to enhance lives in meaningful ways. The Department of Child Services (DCS) authentically engages with children who have experienced abuse or neglect and strengthens families through services focused on support and preservation. DCS administers family preservation and prevention services, foster care, and child support throughout Indiana. You will actively pursue permanency for children and families through reunification, guardianship, adoption, or by supporting youth in their transition to adulthood. While this role can be challenging and may involve long and unconventional hours, it is more than just a job—it is a commitment to uplifting your community and neighbors.
Mission: The Indiana Department of Child Services leads the state's response to allegations of child abuse and neglect while facilitating child support payments. We prioritize the needs and values of those we serve in our efforts to protect children while striving to keep families together whenever feasible.
Vision: Children will thrive in safe, healthy, and supportive families and communities.
Values: At the Indiana Department of Child Services, we empower our team, in collaboration with state and local partners, to make decisions that are in the best interest of every child in our care by embracing:
- Child safety
- Permanency
- Collaborative partnerships with foster and adoptive families
- Diversity, equity, and inclusion
- A culture of safety and transparency
- Continuous improvement
Role Overview:
The Kinship Support Case Coordinator is tasked with delivering targeted and timely services related to kinship placements and support, aimed at improving and sustaining youth placements. The employee will work to minimize kinship disruptions, enhance the availability of kinship options, educate kinship caregivers on DCS policies and procedures, and establish resource connections to support them throughout the case lifecycle. The specialist will also enhance kinship caregivers' understanding of the needs of children and their own requirements, fostering successful placements and reducing disruptions. This position will provide customer service and support to Family Case Managers (FCM) to promote a kin-first welfare culture. The role may be assigned to multiple DCS local offices and/or regions.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position typically begins at $47,000; however, it may be adjusted based on education or relevant work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role include:
- Investigating reported incidents of child abuse, neglect, or dependency, determining whether the incident is substantiated, and making recommendations to a Juvenile Court or County Director for disposition.
- Assessing the level of risk to the child for additional injury or harm, including determining if the child is in imminent danger, and may involve removing the child from the family as necessary, placing the child in a safe environment.
- Conducting needs assessments to identify treatment options for families and children reported to be abused or neglected.
- Preparing and testifying in pre-dispositional and progress reports, maintaining case files, and developing briefing reports for the community child protection team. Creating 'informal adjustment' plans with families and children to divert them from the juvenile justice system.
- Developing case plans to assist families and children in becoming more self-sufficient in a safe and nurturing environment, ensuring a permanent home for the child.
- Creating discharge/transition programming to help families and children achieve and maintain self-sufficiency in a safe environment.
- Monitoring and evaluating the service capabilities of treatment programs and providers to ensure alignment with the case plan.
- Accepting on-call responsibilities as needed to receive and investigate allegations of child abuse or neglect.
- Conducting home studies, family histories, and recommending placements for adoption to an adoption team.
- Visiting children in out-of-home placements to coordinate family reunification, adoption, or independent living efforts.
- Maintaining data to provide management with opportunities to evaluate family and child needs on a trend analysis basis.
This job profile is not intended to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities required of the employee. Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.
What You'll Need for Success:
To be considered for this position, you must meet the following requirements:
