Requirements:

Position Overview
The Surgical Technician operates under the guidance of the Registered Nurse in the Operating Room and collaborates closely with the Nurse Manager. This role involves assisting in the coordination of patient care within the surgical environment and functioning as an integral member of the surgical team. Responsibilities include the preparation and upkeep of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies within the sterile field. The position requires the use of both simple and complex medical equipment, as well as maintaining cleanliness and availability of supplies to ensure high-quality patient care. Participation in quality assurance initiatives, in-service training, and customer service programs is essential. The Surgical Technician is also responsible for managing specimens and maintaining accurate surgical counts. This role requires expertise in specific surgical services, monitoring the surgical schedule for equipment and supply needs, ensuring daily readiness for cases, and supporting the Specialty Nurse with surgeon preference cards while effectively communicating any service changes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with surgeons to address the specialized needs of surgical patients, fostering trusting relationships to ensure optimal surgical outcomes. Anticipate and prepare for equipment and supply needs proactively to facilitate timely and cost-effective arrangements.
  • Support departmental operations by flexibly adjusting shifts and responsibilities to meet the needs of the team while utilizing time efficiently.
  • Maintain a surgical conscience by ensuring an aseptic environment during procedures and documenting any breaks in technique according to AORN Standards. Exhibit consistent and proficient knowledge of procedure-specific instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ensure adherence to safe practices as outlined in the National Patient Safety Goals by following established policies and procedures, as well as guidelines from relevant organizations. Report any noncompliance or violations as necessary.
  • Keep preference cards current and accurate by effectively communicating any changes to relevant team members.
  • Develop professional relationships with a multidisciplinary team to enhance patient care delivery.
  • Engage in supply management and evaluations of new equipment/products, identifying and recommending strategies for cost containment and waste reduction.
  • Actively assist the perioperative registered nurse and team in delivering patient care, ensuring accurate handling and management of specimens and surgical counts. Demonstrate a sense of urgency to promote positive customer experiences throughout the department.
