The Rowitch Laboratory is on the lookout for a skilled bioinformatician to contribute to groundbreaking research efforts. This lab focuses on understanding the intricate mechanisms involved in glial developmental biology and various human conditions, including cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and brain cancer.

The Senior Bioinformatics Research Scientist (RB III) operates autonomously while closely collaborating with Research Scientists, Principal Investigators, Research Nurses, and Research Coordinators. This role involves engaging with researchers to clarify scientific inquiries, outline project scopes, and devise analytical strategies with estimated timelines for completion. The RB III will work independently and alongside bioinformatics experts to assess future bioinformatics requirements and aid in the development of necessary tools and workflows to adapt to the swift advancements in sequencing technologies. The RB III is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and integrating relevant algorithms and software by reviewing pertinent literature, as well as developing and maintaining software tailored to current projects and future needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive bioinformatics analysis support for omics projects, including data analysis and software compilation for next-generation sequencing alignment, polymorphism identification, expression analysis, and visualization tools.
  • Summarize analytical results in a format suitable for initial report drafts and provide preliminary interpretations of the findings.
  • Design, test, and maintain modular software pipelines for genome sequencing, assembly, annotation, metagenomic analysis, and genotyping utilizing high-throughput sequencing platforms.
  • Manage data effectively, including loading and querying from database systems, downloading omic data from public repositories, and transforming data into required formats.
  • Deliver solutions for researchers' challenges through data mining and extraction techniques.
  • Offer bioinformatics expertise in experimental design and study planning, including research proposal development, sample size calculations, and plans for interim assessments and final analyses.
  • Collaborate with fellow bioinformatics professionals to foster excellence in research and education, generating and disseminating innovative ideas and concepts.
  • Educate colleagues, investigators, fellows, and graduate students about bioinformatics and computational biology through mentoring and teaching. This may include organizing and delivering formal bioinformatics courses, interdisciplinary courses, continuing education sessions, and seminars.
Qualifications

Educational & Experience Requirements:
  • BS Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computational Biology, or Bioinformatics is required. An MS Degree in relevant fields is preferred, while a PhD is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a research environment, developing expertise in algorithms, scientific computing, and machine learning or statistics is required.
  • Seven (7) years of experience in manipulating, analyzing, and annotating large genomic datasets is required.
  • Three (3) years of experience in basic science laboratory research is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in neuroscience research bioinformatics applications is highly desirable.
