The State of Vermont is offering a compelling role in construction oversight, looking for a dedicated and proactive individual to join as a Field Civil Engineer. This full-time position typically involves a standard 40-hour workweek, although flexibility is required as contractor hours may include evenings and weekends, with opportunities for overtime.

In this engineering role within the Construction Section, you will be engaged in inspection and oversight of significant highway construction initiatives, encompassing roadway, bridge, and railroad projects, as well as occasional tasks involving rock blasting or rail trail developments.

The selected candidate will gain hands-on experience in various aspects of construction during the active season, including:

  • Serving as an inspector by observing, verifying, measuring, and documenting the work executed by contractors, along with processing payments for satisfactory work.
  • Interpreting project plans and specifications accurately.
  • Conducting sampling and testing of construction materials.
  • Reviewing and validating project records and documentation.
  • Setting up and utilizing survey equipment, compiling data, and performing field calculations.

This position offers a clear career progression, starting with proficiency as an inspector, advancing to roles such as office engineer and chief inspector, and ultimately leading to the position of Resident Engineer, responsible for managing daily contract compliance and construction processes.

Work Environment

Responsibilities are performed in both office and field settings, necessitating access to private transportation. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic risks, and construction sites under various weather conditions, including traversing rough terrain.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or a related technical field is required, along with two years of engineering experience. Alternatively, an Associate's degree in a relevant field and four years of engineering experience, including licensure as an Engineer Intern, will be considered.
