Job Summary:
The University Police Sergeant is a supervisory role responsible for overseeing the daily operations of University Police Officers and Security Officers. This position requires strong leadership and management skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and direct law enforcement staff, ensuring consistent enforcement of laws, regulations, and local ordinances.
- Organize and assign tasks for University Police Officers on patrol shifts, maintaining properly manned shifts in accordance with the approved schedule.
- Review officer paperwork and compile required criminal reports for submission to state and federal agencies.
- Facilitate officer training, monitoring annual training requirements mandated by KSCPOST.
- Communicate with the Lieutenant and Police Chief on a regular basis for approval, direction, and information exchange.
- Execute and oversee operations for crowd control, surveillance, and security at special events held on campus.
- Advise staff on ongoing investigations and adherence to investigative and legal requirements.
- Perform public relations functions, collecting and preparing crime information and statistics for public release.
- Maintain safe care and control of authorized equipment and vehicles, performing spot inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs.
- Perform crime prevention analyses, surveying buildings and facilities for areas of strength and vulnerability.
- Maintain data required for the accreditation process.
- Maintain and update all formal policies and procedures for the Department.
- Serve as the Department's Local Agency Security Officer, monitoring adherence to policies and regulations set forth by KCJIS.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; relevant college coursework preferred.
- At least three years of law enforcement experience required.
- Certification by the Kansas Law Commission on Peace Officer's Standards and Training required.
- Valid driver's license required.
Working Conditions:
This position involves exposure to varying inclement weather conditions while on patrol and some exposure to loud noises.
Additional Information:
Must work effectively with a diverse population and maintain composure under stressful circumstances.
