Job Summary

The Department of Food & Agriculture is seeking a skilled Agricultural Technician I to join our team. As a key member of our regulatory compliance team, you will play a critical role in preventing the introduction of unwanted pests into California.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct regulatory inspections on vehicles and commodities to ensure compliance with state regulations.
  • Enter the interior of vehicles, including trailers, trunks, and passenger compartments, to inspect for and remove hitchhiking pests.
  • Read and interpret shipping manifests and quarantine certificates to determine the contents and admissibility of commercial shipments.
  • Use reference materials to determine the admissibility of private shipments of plant material.
  • Complete on-the-job training to learn and stay up-to-date on changes in regulations and inspection procedures.
  • Sample and inspect rejected or regulated commodities for pest infestation.
  • Preserve and ship suspect pest specimens for laboratory identification.
  • Dispose of rejected commodities in accordance with established procedures.
Working Conditions

The majority of the job duties are performed outdoors, with occasional indoor work. Employees may be exposed to varying temperatures, rain, fog, dust, fumes, gases, and odors. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

Requirements

Priority consideration will be given to applicants receiving state public assistance under the CalWORKs or Temporary Assistance for Needy Family (TANF) programs. Applicants must submit verification of CalWORKs or TANF eligibility.
