Job Description and Duties

The Health Services Specialist will be directed by the Nurse Administrator/Assistant Nurse Administrator or designee/Supervising Registered Nurse in the Central Nursing Services Department at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

  • Ensuring that there is a completed, relevant Admission nursing assessment, from which Nursing interventions and input are provided into the Treatment Care Planning process.
  • Overseeing the medication administration process to assure compliance with hospital policy and procedure, including certification of licensed nursing staff to administer medications.
  • Monitoring that correct nursing care procedures are in effect and are being carried out by all nursing staff.
  • Assuring that audits required by nursing service and the Program Management are completed and summarized monthly and quarterly.
  • Assuring all Programs nursing care staff are adequately trained in all aspects of nursing documentation.
  • Having sufficient computer skills to write reports, input data and extract data for necessary reports to monitor the quality of nursing services.
  • Responding and participating in emergency behavioral/medical situations.
  • Assuring that nursing staff are trained and Public Health procedures are carried out by staff as required to protect patients and staff from infection and disease.
  • Monitoring and evaluating nursing care and documentation.
  • Visiting each unit in the Program at least daily.
  • Monitoring restrained and/or secluded patients daily.
  • Assisting staff assessing and authorizing Restraints and Seclusion, giving first aid and CPR; following infection control procedures as needed.
  • Evaluating and monitoring the quality of care provided; observing and intervening in patient behavior that may injure people, damage property or signal impending escape attempts.
  • Applying and demonstrating knowledge of and correct methods of Therapeutic Strategies and Interventions (TSI).
  • Assuring that documentation and Nursing Interventions for current treatment care plans are in place.
  • Serving as a resource person and consultant to all hospital personnel.
Requirements

In order to be considered for this job vacancy, you must satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • Be List Eligible: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at, OR
  • Be Transfer Eligible: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
  • Be Reinstatement Eligible: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

Minimum qualifications will be verified prior to being scheduled for an interview. Please provide proof of minimum qualifications with your application submission, which may include a copy of your unofficial college transcripts.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a professional Registered Nurse in California as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing. (Applicants who are in the process of securing approval of their qualifications by the California Board of Registered Nursing will be admitted to the examination, but they must possess all legal requirements as determined by that Board before they will be eligible for appointment.) AND Either I Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of science degree with a major in a health-related field and one year of nursing experience working with developmentally or mentally disabled persons.

Or II Experience:

  • One year of experience performing the duties of a nursing classification comparable in level of responsibility to a Registered Nurse, Range B, in a California developmental center or State hospital working with developmentally or mentally disabled persons.

Or III Experience:

  • One year of experience directing the nursing services of a developmental center or State hospital level-of-care unit during an eight-hour shift working with developmentally or mentally disabled persons.

If it is determined that an applicant does not meet the minimum qualifications, the applicant's name may be removed from the eligibility list.

Special Requirements

You MUST provide your current California Registered Nurse License number, free and cleared of disciplinary action, on your application.
