Role of the Garden Supervisor

The Garden Supervisor plays a pivotal role in overseeing the care and upkeep of the garden's diverse plant collections and landscapes. This position involves managing daily operations, staff schedules, and ensuring compliance with established protocols. The supervisor collaborates with other leaders to optimize garden management practices, coordinate activities, and uphold aesthetic standards. Additionally, this role includes contributing to garden design and seasonal displays, managing budgets, and providing training for staff and volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise both permanent and temporary garden personnel, ensuring effective maintenance practices and adherence to company policies.
  • Work with department leadership to create and document best management practices for garden operations.
  • Coordinate garden activities, including irrigation schedules and seasonal maintenance plans.
  • Maintain high aesthetic standards across designated garden zones and collaborate with other supervisors for seamless operations.
  • Conduct landscape maintenance to support seasonal displays and uphold the mission of the gardens.
  • Assist in the design and development of garden areas and seasonal exhibits.
  • Monitor plant health and soil fertility, implementing integrated pest management strategies.
  • Maintain accurate records of work activities and manage garden equipment and supplies.
  • Engage with visitors, providing educational insights and representing Cheekwood in community events.
  • Support departmental budgeting and procurement processes.

Qualifications

Education: An associate or bachelor's degree in a relevant field is preferred, or equivalent experience. Certification as a pesticide applicator in Tennessee is required within one year of employment.

Experience: A minimum of three years in garden maintenance or related fields is essential.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in identifying various plant species and understanding plant healthcare principles.
  • Competent in operating and maintaining landscape equipment safely.
  • Detail-oriented with a positive and professional demeanor.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Flexible to adapt to varying schedules based on operational needs.
