Under the supervision of the Lab Central Supervisor/Coordinator, the Clerk/Phlebotomist operates as a skilled phlebotomist adhering to established protocols for the collection, management, and transportation of biological samples. This role encompasses both the reception and clerical duties associated with inpatient and outpatient testing. The phlebotomy services are available 24/7 within the hospital setting, requiring staff to work rotating weekends and holidays, as well as potentially varied hours based on departmental requirements. There may also be a need to travel to external locations for specimen collection.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Skills and Execution

  • Conducts venipuncture and other specimen collection techniques in accordance with established guidelines. Adjusts responsibilities based on workflow demands and patient needs.
  • Independently performs venipuncture in various hospital departments (e.g., Emergency Department) and travels to off-site locations for specimen collection as necessary.
  • Acts as a proficient phlebotomist and provides assistance to patients with challenging venous access.
  • Responds promptly to all emergency codes and aids in the swift delivery of specimens to the laboratory.
  • Evaluates the quality and suitability of specimens (e.g., QNS, clotted, labeling, proper collection/container) and takes appropriate actions (e.g., redraw, notify nursing unit) while completing necessary quality documentation.
  • Meets established benchmarks for collecting stat, timed, round, and routine specimens (aiming for a 6-minute collection time per patient).
  • Follows protocols for the handling and transport of biological/infectious specimens.
  • Prints, monitors, and verifies Laboratory Information System (LIS) reports to ensure timely specimen collection.
  • May work additional hours or shifts in the event of unplanned absences or increased workload.

Outpatient Reception and Specimen Accessioning

  • Greets patients upon arrival at the reception area in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Accurately processes all testing orders, ensuring correct physician identification and specimen distribution to the main laboratory.
  • Ensures proper correlation between orders and specimens, confirming correct identification and following up with units as necessary.

Registration and Insurance Verification

  • Handles outpatient registrations for specimens received from external facilities (e.g., home care, assisted living).
  • Conducts insurance verification using online resources and addresses any discrepancies.
  • Inputs patient information into the appropriate Health Information System (HIS) categories.

Clerical and Support Functions

  • Files reports and documents promptly and accurately.
  • Maintains an organized work area and ensures supplies are replenished as needed.
  • Monitors inventory for expiration dates and maintains cleanliness of work surfaces.
  • Records temperature logs (e.g., refrigerator, freezer) consistently and takes corrective actions when discrepancies arise.
  • Addresses and resolves issues with office equipment, such as printers and copiers, demonstrating problem-solving skills.

Professional Development and Additional Duties

  • Maintains competencies in all relevant testing areas and seeks opportunities for professional growth through continuing education.
  • Participates in laboratory and hospital educational sessions and may present department-specific training or projects.
  • Contributes to the training of new staff and students in phlebotomy and clinical laboratory technology.
  • Engages in quality improvement initiatives within the department and assists in their implementation.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

  • Preferred one year of experience in phlebotomy.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with a minimum of three years of experience.
  • Desirable clerical experience.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and experience with computer data entry is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • ASCP accreditation/certification is highly desirable.

OTHER:

  • Individuals in this role may come into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials, requiring adherence to universal precautions and infection control policies.
  • This position may require working hours beyond the regular schedule, including weekends and holidays, based on departmental needs.
