Position Summary:
The Infection Control Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the Infection Prevention & Control Director or Manager in executing and managing the infection prevention and control program. This position is essential for providing education, generating data, and analyzing key quality metrics.
This role is also pivotal as a subject matter expert in healthcare quality and patient safety, contributing to a data-driven performance improvement initiative aimed at enhancing quality, performance, and patient safety outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilizes epidemiological principles and statistical techniques pertinent to Infection Prevention & Control.
- Applies fundamental concepts of general, clinical, and environmental microbiology to mitigate infection risks among patients, healthcare personnel, and visitors.
- Employs educational strategies to develop, implement, and assess the effectiveness of the Infection Prevention & Control Program.
- Acts as a liaison and internal consultant for various departments regarding infection prevention and control matters.
- Coordinates and performs ongoing surveillance to collect, analyze, and evaluate data related to hospital-acquired infections, reportable diseases, and other infection control challenges.
Develops and executes action plans for managing clusters, outbreaks, and infections. Conducts proactive risk assessments and formulates recommendations for infection prevention. Reports findings to leadership and regulatory bodies as necessary.
Data Management:
- Collects, reviews, and analyzes data for entry into essential databases including Midas, CDC (NHSN), and local health departments.
- Assists in the formulation, development, and implementation of policies and procedures.
- Ensures compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards, participating in the creation and monitoring of corrective action plans.
- Facilitates the design, implementation, and evaluation of performance improvement strategies using methodologies such as PDSA, Lean, and Six Sigma.
- Contributes to quality and patient safety initiatives through audits, chart reviews, and data collection as required.

- Demonstrates consistent attendance and performs additional duties as needed.
Work Environment:
This position is primarily sedentary with some manual skills required. The working conditions are generally pleasant, with minimal occupational risk. The role may involve exerting up to 10 lbs. of force.
