About the Role

PacifiCorp is seeking a highly skilled Data Science Manager to lead our data science group in Portland or Salt Lake City. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, delivering, and implementing data science strategies and solutions to support our business objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the day-to-day activities of the data science team and manage projects and initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage data science and predictive analytics to solve critical business challenges.
  • Grow, lead, and mentor other data scientists to develop their skills and expertise.
  • Establish and maintain models, tools, methods, and frameworks for complex analytical problems.
  • Develop and implement scalable, efficient, automated processes for large-scale data analysis, model development, and model implementation.
  • Conduct complex research studies and technical analyses to support company objectives and enable Transmission and Distribution Operations.
  • Work cross-functionally to develop and implement company standards and processes relating to data science and data governance.
  • Lead data science projects, processes, or systems over their life cycle, including project identification, scope development, implementation, and long-term operations and maintenance.
  • Provide technical expertise across the business in data science to support functions such as wildfire mitigation, reliability, and risk within the T&D Operations organization.
  • Coordinate or support fire data analysis and fire investigations.
  • Serve as the company expert in data science and provide authoritative consultation and recommendations to senior management.
  • Develop detailed computational analysis, including data science, computer modeling, and scripting, and integrate methods and products within and across company software products.
  • Participate in government, industry, collegiate, and other applicable associations or work groups that influence or set policy impacting the future of our utility.
  • Determine methods and techniques for obtaining results.
  • Prepare written testimony, regulatory filings, data request responses, and public presentation materials.
  • Provide leadership to develop data literacy and scripting knowledge across the team.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Analytics, Data Science, or Math from an accredited college/university.
  • A minimum of 10 or more years of experience in a power/utility/energy industry or related profession, including experience performing highly technical work of a specialized nature.
  • A minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Python (or related language) and associated libraries for machine learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to construct and optimize SQL queries.
  • Exceptional technical writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex data in a simple, actionable way through visualizations.
  • Ability to review scientific literature and incorporate knowledge into ongoing projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership and/or project management skills.
  • Expert knowledge of industry best practices for data science and data governance.
Preferences

Master's or Ph.D. in quantitative fields.

Experience working with public utility commissions (PUCs) and applicable requirements/regulations.

Experience with wildfire science or wildfire risk analytics use cases.

Experience working in the utilities, risk management, or wildfire mitigation sector.

Proficiency with Microsoft Azure Machine Learning environment.

Experience with C#, Spark, or R.

Experience with time series modeling and forecasting.

Experience using ESRI toolsets including ArcGIS Pro and QGIS.

Experience utilizing Python geospatial packages such as matplotlib, shapely, and other relevant spatial tools.

In-depth knowledge of Bayesian statistics including Bayesian hierarchical modeling.

Understanding of the company's business and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.

Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.
