Position Overview

At Cocoon House, we are dedicated to empowering young individuals, families, and communities in Snohomish County to overcome the challenges of homelessness through outreach, housing solutions, and preventative measures. As an Overnight Residential Youth Counselor, your primary role will be to create a secure and nurturing atmosphere for adolescents under the care of Cocoon House. You will encourage positive interactions, facilitate life skills, social skills, and various enrichment activities at our Emergency Shelter.

In this position, you will have the chance to establish meaningful connections with clients, demonstrating healthy boundaries while collaborating with them in a residential environment. The ideal candidate will possess a genuine passion for youth engagement, a solid understanding of effective youth development practices, and a commitment to making a significant impact in their lives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster supportive relationships with youth and colleagues through a positive and cooperative approach.
  • Model and maintain healthy and safe boundaries with youth.
  • Respect and accept diverse lifestyles, behaviors, and cultural practices.
  • Evaluate emergency situations, gather relevant information, and provide appropriate support.
  • Adhere to mandated reporting and licensing regulations.
  • De-escalate crises among youth using anti-racist, inclusive, equity-based, and trauma-informed care principles.
  • Conduct intakes and exits for youth, orienting new clients to the program and ensuring accurate recordkeeping.
  • Collaborate with case managers to align with youth case plans and maintain effective communication with fellow staff.
  • Supervise youth, ensuring safety while holding them accountable to established policies and guidelines.
  • Assist and instruct youth in household tasks.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of facilities.
  • Prepare meals, including grocery shopping, planning, and cooking.
  • Coordinate appointments, manage prescriptions, and dispense medications for youth.
  • Engage with other service providers to ensure youth fulfill their commitments.
  • Respond to community inquiries and referrals with accurate information.
  • Participate in planning and implementing enrichment activities with team members.
  • Provide guidance for off-site services to youth.
  • Transport youth to appointments as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • A minimum of 6 months experience working with youth.
  • DCYF background clearance required.

  • Valid driver's license, auto insurance, and reliable transportation are necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all clients.
  • Must be able to hear alarms and voices.
  • Ability to read and understand various materials.
  • Proficient in operating a phone and computer for recordkeeping.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to navigate stairs quickly in case of emergencies.
