Atrium Health, a prominent community-oriented academic healthcare organization serving the regions of North Carolina and South Carolina, is seeking skilled Advanced Practice Providers to enhance our Division of Acute Care Surgery at Atrium Health-Carolinas Medical Center.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to conduct comprehensive history and physical evaluations. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, and monitoring various co-existing medical conditions arising from critical illnesses or injuries. The role involves managing ventilator settings, administering vasopressors, and addressing complex clinical scenarios. Surgical procedures performed after appropriate privileging include: Chest Tube insertion, Central Line placement, Arterial Line establishment, Bronchoscopy, and assistance with bedside Tracheostomy and Percutaneous Gastrostomy Tube placements.

The Division is structured into three key Sections: Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute/Emergency General Surgery. Our team comprises 17 surgeons and 15 Advanced Practice Providers. Trauma and Surgical Critical Care services are delivered at Atrium Charlotte, a tertiary/quaternary care facility with 874 beds and recognized as an ACS-verified Level I trauma center. Our Trauma service experiences approximately 7000 Trauma Code activations and around 4500 trauma admissions annually. The Surgical Critical Care team manages approximately 1500 patient consults each year across various specialties, including Transplant, HEENT, Surgical Oncology, Emergency General Surgery, Orthopedic, Hepatobiliary, Trauma, and Vascular care.

Recently, Atrium Health and Wake Forest Baptist Health, along with Wake Forest School of Medicine, have united as a single enterprise, enhancing our capacity to provide personalized care to over 15 million patients annually with a workforce exceeding 70,000.

Position Overview:

  • Participate in rotational shifts and assignments covering both Surgical Critical Care and Trauma service lines.
  • Surgical Critical Care coverage is required 24/7/365.
  • Trauma coverage includes Monday through Sunday, with additional responsibilities in the trauma clinic.
  • Weekend and holiday coverage is mandatory on alternating schedules.
  • Opportunities for teaching residents and/or APP Fellows are available.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess or be eligible for a DEA license and be authorized to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in their respective state. Eligibility for prescriptive authority through the Board of Nursing or Medical Board in North Carolina is required. A current BLS for Healthcare Provider certification from AHA is mandatory, with an expiration date extending beyond 90 days from the start of practice. Candidates should demonstrate strong critical thinking abilities, interpersonal skills, and the capacity to prioritize and make proactive decisions. Current certifications in BCLS, ACLS, PALS, and ATLS are preferred.

  • Nurse Practitioner: A Master's Degree or Doctorate of Nursing Practice is required, along with a valid Registered Nurse license. Certification in the relevant practice area from a nationally recognized certifying body is essential. Acute Care board certification is mandatory based on the population and acuity served.
    • One year of experience as an ACNP or AGANP is required.
  • Physician Assistant: Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program is required, with a Master's Degree preferred. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is preferred.
    • One year of experience is required.
