Job Summary

The Certified Anesthesia Technician plays a vital role in the Anesthesia Department, working under the direction of the Department Administrator or designee. This position requires a strong understanding of anesthesia equipment and supplies, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform daily maintenance and quality control of anesthesia machines, ensuring they are in good working order.
  • Clean, sterilize, and decontaminate all non-disposable anesthesia-related items, including anesthesia machines, scopes, and tubing.
  • Inspect instruments and equipment for damage and initiate repair and replacement processes as needed.
  • Complete and maintain monthly logs regarding maintenance and cleaning and quality checks of anesthesia equipment.
  • Ensure availability of backup monitoring equipment at all times and provide timely replacement as needed.
  • Assemble basic anesthesia setups, perform anesthesia equipment turnovers, and verify and set up age-specific equipment.
  • Assist with patient transport to PACU/ICU, including preparation of oxygen sources and transport monitors.
  • Coordinate patient monitoring and equipment availability with PACU and Critical Care Units.
  • Assist with patient transport to the operating room, including placement of patients on the OR table and non-invasive monitors.
  • Assist in direct patient care under direct supervision in routine and emergency situations, including arterial line, central venous pressure line, Swan-Ganz, cardiac output, fiber optic intubation, and regional nerve block.
  • Hold patients when patients are receiving epidurals.
  • Appropriately set up rooms based on procedures.
  • Assemble Arterial Lines, Hotline (IV Fluid Warmer), Level One Rapid Infuser, and process scopes.
  • Prepare anesthesia procedure trays as requested.
  • Meet annual competencies.
  • Assist with setup of invasive monitoring equipment in routine and emergency situations.
  • Assist anesthesia providers with induction of anesthesia, including cricoid pressure for intubation as directed.
  • Provide supplies needed for general/regional anesthesia and keep anesthesia equipment supplies stocked.
  • Maintain adequate stock of supplies in anesthesia machines and carts, including rotation and replacement of dated items.
  • Coordinate with pharmacy to maintain stock, return, and replace all outdated items except controlled drugs.
  • Interact with patients, family members, and external vendors when new products are introduced.
  • Remove and dispose of all supplies and equipment following procedures performed by anesthesia providers.
  • Prepare and process all anesthesia-related items that require disinfection, decontamination, and sterilization.
  • Coordinate with Environmental Services for prompt operating room turnaround time.
  • Pick up and deliver lab specimens, ABGs, etc.
  • Coordinate with Unit Manager, if applicable, to maintain and revise inventory par levels for all supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with orientation, education, and in-services as requested by management and co-workers.
  • Promote, ensure, and improve customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills consistent with the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service.
Requirements
  • Experience
  • Basic computer ability required
  • Must be able to lift 45 lbs. from an overhead position
  • Must be able to push/pull up to 500 lbs.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE (mask, goggles, gloves, hat, gown)
  • Must be able to work with caustic cleaning solutions
  • Must be able to stand or walk continuously
  • BLS from AHA required
  • Education
  • Graduate of an ASATT-approved program in anesthesia technology with an AS degree, OR a minimum of two (2) years experience as a Certified Anesthesia Technician, OR a minimum of three (3) years experience as an anesthesia technician with recent ASATT certification
  • License, Certification, Registration
  • Anesthesia Technician Certificate from American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians
  • Basic Life Support
