Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Hyliion is a pioneering company in the field of clean, flexible, and affordable electricity production. Our primary focus is on developing distributed power generators that can operate on various fuel sources, ensuring a future-proof energy economy.

Job Purpose

The Mechanical Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting the development, integration, and validation of the KARNO generator. This key position will execute the design of assigned products using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ownership of hardware components and/or sub-systems from all avenues, including functionality, durability, manufacturability, serviceability, cost, weight, validation, etc.
  • Collaboration with design, electrical, software, and performance teams to generate robust designs.
  • Conducting technical reviews to present findings and proposing solutions for any identified conflicts. Managing trade-off discussions and engineering decisions.
  • Building, testing, and validating prototypes early and often to tease out flaws in design.
  • Supporting the design checking process by reviewing prints and ensuring tolerances, processes, and material specifications are aligned with the Hyliion product design guidelines.
  • Supporting the identification and selection of suppliers to support prototype and production needs.
  • Supporting the purchasing process and assisting in the procurement of hardware from key suppliers as needed.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, needed, or required for the business.

  • Education, Experience, and Certifications
    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering.
    • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering preferred.
    • 0 to 5 years of engineering experience, with a track record of successfully designing and troubleshooting complex systems.
    • 3 years in the automotive, aerospace, or medical device industry preferred.
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Proficiency in ASME Y14.5 GD&T Standard.
    • Experience in fluid/thermal systems design and optimization.
    • Expert in NX 3D CAD tools with a history of creating 2D prints with associated GD&T.
    • Experience in structural and thermal FEA toolsets such as ANSYS.
    • Exposure to electrical systems, including motor, inverter, and batteries, is a plus.
    • Highly collaborative personality with a willingness to learn and adapt, involving interaction with adjacent functions to solve complex issues.
    • Experience in lab testing environments, including installing, calibrating, and reading various forms of instrumentation for pressure, temperature, flow, strain, acceleration, etc.
    • Ability to design and troubleshoot complex mechanical and thermal systems.
    • Ability to effectively and positively communicate verbally and in writing with customers (internal and external), to address their needs promptly and to follow through on commitments.
    • A self-starter with good problem-solving and good communication skills, excellent numeracy, and spatial awareness.
    • Competency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Role Classification and Working Conditions

This is a salaried, exempt-level position. This position typically works in an office environment and is also exposed to operations/warehouses/production environments.

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to travel, as needed, by plane, automobile, etc., up to 10%.
