POSITION SUMMARY:
The role involves ensuring radiation safety, conducting quality control, and maintaining quality assurance within the physics department in Radiation Oncology and other designated areas. Responsibilities include planning radiotherapy treatments, including Gamma Knife procedures, among others.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
A Master's degree in Medical Physics or a closely related field is required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of three years of clinical experience in a radiation therapy setting or successful completion of a CAMPEP accredited residency program is essential.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Must qualify as an authorized medical physicist on a radioactive material license in the State of Georgia. Completion of Part I of the American Board of Radiology certification exam in Radiation Therapy Physics is required, with active pursuit of ABR certification when eligible.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts external beam radiotherapy treatment planning.
a. Executes routine dose calculations and generates necessary patient data for treatment calculations, compensating filter designs, mold constructions, and blocking device fabrications.
b. Obtains routine or specialized dosimetry information for physical parameters on treatment units.
c. Documents individualized treatment plans, ensuring all dosimetry and technical data are included in the patient's treatment chart.
d. Collaborates with Radiation Oncologists to address dosimetric challenges and develop special techniques as needed throughout patient treatment.
e. Coordinates and performs computerized treatment plans for external beam therapy.
f. Reviews all aspects of treatment planning.
g. Plans and supervises stereotactic extracranial radiotherapy treatments.
- Manages Gamma Knife treatments.
a. Participates in MR and CT imaging acquisitions and structure localization to ensure consistency with effective treatment planning.
b. Collaborates with Neurosurgeons and Radiation Oncologists to create individualized treatment plans, including all necessary dosimetry and technical data for Gamma Knife treatments.
c. Implements quality assurance and radiation safety protocols for each patient's treatment.
d. Assists in delivering the treatment plan to the patient.
- Conducts quality control functions.
a. Performs monthly quality assurance checks on accelerators and Gamma Knife systems.
b. Reviews all technical and scientific data from simulation through treatment to ensure accuracy and precision in patient treatment plans.
c. Conducts chart checks for any mathematical errors or prescription changes during treatment.
d. Applies specific dosimetry methods (Ion chamber, TLD, or film) to address clinical challenges.
e. Performs necessary calibrations of radiotherapy equipment and Gamma Knife systems.
f. Ensures quality assurance and quality control in patient treatments.
g. Conducts quality assurance on IMRT treatment plans.
- Oversees brachytherapy treatment planning.
a. Verifies prescriptions from radiation oncologists and the radioisotope used in brachytherapy.
b. Collaborates with simulation therapists to ensure effective simulation/CT techniques and outcomes.
c. Executes treatment planning in accordance with prescriptions.
d. Consults with radiation oncologists to resolve dosimetric issues and develop necessary special techniques for treatment.
e. Understands and applies state regulations governing the use of radioactive materials in brachytherapy.
- Makes informed decisions to enhance productivity and minimize costs.
a. Considers equipment and supply costs before making requests or selections.
b. Utilizes available supplies efficiently.
c. Assists management in identifying cost containment strategies or revenue enhancement initiatives.
d. Manages time effectively.
e. Accurately enters and reviews daily charges.
