Job Title: Public Safety Officer II - Armed

Location: South Suburban Hospital, Hazel Crest, IL

Full Time; 2nd Shift

~Rotating Weekends

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional security services with professionalism, fairness, and compassion in challenging situations, adhering to policies, procedures, and training.
  • Conduct routine patrols to ensure safety and security, identifying vulnerabilities, hazards, and fire conditions, and enforcing all safety and security rules and regulations.
  • Respond to emergencies, including combative or threatening patients or visitors, and team member incidents, serving as a primary resource for de-escalation.
  • Investigate incidents, complete timely and accurate reports, and address complaints to the appropriate leader.
  • Liaise with state and local law enforcement and first responder agencies, coordinating and briefing law enforcement prisoner patient guards to ensure policy compliance.
  • Assist in administrative duties, reviewing reports and records, inspecting uniforms and equipment, and maintaining training records.
  • Stay current with Department training standards in radio communications, verbal de-escalation, stabilization, CPR, and conducted energy weapon (Taser) use.

Requirements:

  • Security Officer Healthcare Certification (CHSO) issued by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within two years of appointment.
  • A valid driver's license issued by the Division of Motor Vehicle.
  • Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card or Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) license issued by the Illinois State Police.
  • Meet State of IL Department of Financial and Professional Regulation licensing requirements and obtain a Firearm Control Card (FCC) for Proprietary Personnel within 90 days of hire.
  • Certified in Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) use within 90 days of hire and periodically thereafter.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 4 years of experience in a security or public safety role, or completion of 30 credit hours in a Criminal Justice, Police Science, or similar course of study from an accredited college or university, and 3 years' work experience with 1 year of experience in a security/safety role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Illinois team members must have completed State of Illinois 40-hour armed course with semi-automatic pistol endorsement.
  • Willingness to carry a department-authorized firearm while on duty.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and sound reasoning while maintaining a courteous and tactful demeanor in dealings with employees, visitors, and patients.
  • Ability to use a computer to document work, including Microsoft Word, Excel, navigating a web page, and database entry.
  • Ability to defend self and/or others in case of physical confrontations when de-escalation efforts fail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people, including clear diction without impediments.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must sit, stand, walk, and drive throughout the workday, and must lift up to 35 lbs. occasionally.
  • Must be able to push/pull with 35 lbs. of force.
  • Must possess the hand strength, dexterity, and ability to safely operate a firearm.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, and radiation hazards.
  • Frequent exposure to aggressive behavior and emotionally charged situations.
  • Must be physically fit and able to walk all areas of the facilities and grounds, to restrain those who need restraint and be able to assist nursing staff with lifting patients of all sizes.
