GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This role operates under the general oversight of the Aquatics Director or Aquatic Center Coordinator, performing a range of poolside and water safety responsibilities to ensure the secure use of aquatic facilities. The lifeguard will monitor water activities to ensure safety and prevent accidents or injuries to patrons, while also enforcing facility rules and regulations.
SUPERVISION: None.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as a lifeguard, observing patron activities and enforcing rules.
- Discipline or remove patrons for rule violations.
- Monitor patrons to prevent theft or misuse of facilities.
- Provide first aid as necessary to assist individuals with injuries.
- Conduct water rescues as required to avert mishaps and drowning incidents.
- Maintain constant vigilance and awareness of patron activities to minimize the risk of incidents.
- Perform routine upkeep and maintenance of the facility, including cleaning decks, walls, windows, pool equipment, locker rooms, and restrooms.
- Participate in maintaining daily records related to accidents, rescues, water temperature, and chemical testing procedures; report unsafe conditions to supervisors.
- Assist in conducting water quality checks and periodically collect water samples for testing chlorination and pH levels.
- Execute related duties as necessary.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
1. Education and Experience:
- Sufficient education and training to demonstrate the ability to perform the above duties; specialized training and certification (Red Cross) as a Lifeguard; AND
- Six (6) months of general experience related to safe swimming, aquatics program participation, or a related background is preferred; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of the rules and regulations of aquatic facilities; water safety practices, rules, and guidelines; First Aid, CPR; swimming instruction techniques.
- Ability to demonstrate advanced swimming skills and establish effective working relationships with colleagues and the public, along with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
3. Special Qualifications:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must be Red Cross certified as a lifeguard and First Aid/CPR trained.
4. Work Environment:
- The incumbent will work in a typical pool setting with a climate-controlled environment and high levels of humidity and moisture. Tasks will involve various physical activities, generally requiring muscular strain, such as swimming, walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and seeing. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity are required. Mental application involves memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking.
