Sheet Metal Mechanic

Job Summary:

The Sheet Metal Mechanic will be responsible for planning, laying out, fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing sheet metal components and systems. This role requires a deep understanding of the properties of various materials, machining processes, and layout techniques, employing both hand and power tools, as well as machinery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine the fabrication and installation processes for sheet metal products.
  • Select appropriate gauge and type of sheet metal based on project requirements.
  • Utilize shop mathematics and layout techniques to mark dimensions and reference lines on materials.
  • Set up and operate fabrication equipment and hand tools for cutting, bending, and forming materials.
  • Finish surfaces by trimming, filing, grinding, and buffing using various tools.
  • Assemble components by welding, soldering, bolting, and using other fastening methods.
  • Install fabricated assemblies according to specifications, utilizing appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Conduct inspections of assemblies and installations to ensure compliance with specifications using measuring instruments.
  • Fabricate ducts for HVAC systems to optimize performance and efficiency.
  • Ensure all materials are available and suitable for project completion.
  • Maintain accurate records of project activities and inspections.
  • Alter parts using various tools and equipment as necessary.
  • Safely maneuver and secure completed units in place.
  • Promote efficient use of materials and methods to minimize waste.

Qualifications:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of five years of experience in sheet metal work is essential. Candidates must be capable of field measuring and fabricating simple fittings and possess the ability to accurately measure for shop input. Proficiency with small hand tools is necessary.

Language Skills:

Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not include supervisory duties.

Mathematical Skills:

Basic math skills are necessary, including the ability to perform operations involving American money, weight, and volume measurements.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to understand and execute detailed written or oral instructions, as well as address problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

A valid Driver's License is required, along with meeting MVR standards for operating a company vehicle.

Physical Demands:

Candidates must be able to climb ladders, lift and carry 50 pounds or more, distinguish colors for electrical work, and work in confined spaces. The role may involve working at heights and in varying temperature conditions.

Work Environment:

The characteristics of the work environment are representative of those encountered while performing essential job functions. Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
