Position Summary:

This role requires extensive national travel, with candidates expected to be available for up to 100% travel across the country.

The Lead Fiber Optic Testing Specialist will possess comprehensive experience in fiber optic evaluation and diagnostics. This individual will oversee the entire field-testing operation under the guidance of an installation supervisor. Responsibilities include providing regular updates to management regarding project milestones, site arrivals, work completions, site departures, and any job-related delays or challenges. The Lead Specialist will also be accountable for timely progress reports on the overall project and will communicate relevant information to customers and installation supervisors using project management tools. Maintaining required certifications is essential, as the Lead Specialist will lead the assigned team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct all Fiber Optic Evaluation Tests, including:
    • Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR)
    • Optical Return Loss
    • Optical Power Loss
    • Dispersion Assessments
    • Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD)
    • Chromatic Dispersion (CD)
  • Ensure proper maintenance of tools and monitor calibration needs.
  • Prepare and submit daily reports to the installation supervisor.
  • Delegate specific tasks to junior technicians and oversee their work for efficiency, quality, and safety.
  • Collaborate with supervisors for scheduling tasks.
  • Verify the accuracy of test results by confirming data from the opposite end before leaving the site.
  • Coordinate testing procedures within the customer's maintenance window, if applicable.
  • Ensure all test parameters meet customer requirements.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on all reports to identify errors and inconsistencies.
  • Oversee the safety, quality, and efficiency of the team.
  • Engage with customer representatives while on-site.
  • Provide technical assistance to customer contacts and technicians as needed.
  • Implement node-to-node testing using OTDR traces and power traces, addressing OSP issues and high reflection problems.
  • Conduct Bit Error Rate (BER) testing for the deployment of 100G circuits to ensure comprehensive system testing.
  • Execute commissioning and integration of optical transport equipment and long-haul systems, including photonics, power audits, and signal flow.
  • Perform hardware assessments, including power verification and system tests.
  • Conduct long-term, load, stress, and performance characterization testing.
  • Inventory all job-related materials.
  • Ensure adherence to project deadlines, service timelines, and quality standards.
  • Generate test reports and analytical documents.
  • Maintain on-site job records and administrative tracking.
  • Apply logical troubleshooting methods to network services, including fault isolation on network equipment and customer hardware/software applications.
  • Become proficient with internal project management software for tracking order flow.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering and Project Managers to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Meet or exceed documented quality standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Data Center/PoP/CO commissioning, provisioning, testing, and turn-up.
  • Proficient in using various Fiber Characterization testing equipment, including EXFO and VIAVI.
  • Efficient in utilizing fiber cleaning kits.
  • Possess strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to adapt to diverse work environments.
  • Solid understanding of optical routing equipment installations.
  • Knowledgeable in fiber optic cable installation and testing practices.
  • Familiarity with AC/DC power systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and adept at learning new software systems.
  • Must have a clean driving record and pass a drug test.

Experience Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of experience in Data Center/PoP/CO installation, testing, and turn-up.
  • In-depth knowledge of testing and cleaning optical fibers.
