ASSIGNMENT

POSITION:
We currently have multiple openings for this role. Typical working hours are five and a half (5.5) hours daily. We are creating eligibility lists to hire substitutes and to fill future openings for Educational Support Specialist II, Educational Support Specialist II - Bilingual (Spanish), Educational Support Specialist II - Bilingual/Biliterate (Spanish).

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Assists students in specialized educational programs who may have various physical disabilities, learning challenges, emotional or behavioral issues on an individual or group basis, reinforcing lesson plans; independently modifies instructional methods and materials; maintains student discipline during group activities; performs classroom support tasks; keeps a variety of records; and executes other related responsibilities as required. Positions in specialized language classes necessitate working with non- and limited English-speaking students in their primary language.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The role of Educational Support Specialist II is characterized by responsibilities that include operating under a master teacher framework; issuing student referrals; working in specialized educational settings such as Special Education, Opportunity Classes, ESL, Alternative Learning Programs, and Vocational Training; assisting students who are low achievers, limited/non-English speakers, or who face physical disabilities, learning challenges, or significant behavioral issues; employing various motivational and disciplinary techniques tailored to individual student needs; independently adjusting the pace and approach of instructional materials; collaborating with multiple learning systems; and spending the majority of time directly engaged with students.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION: The No Child Left Behind Act mandates that all paraprofessionals providing instructional support possess a high school diploma or equivalent along with one of the following:

1. A minimum of 48 semester or 72 quarter units of college coursework.

2. An Associate or higher degree from an accredited institution.

3. Successful completion of an assessment demonstrating knowledge of teaching, reading, writing, and mathematics.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of six (6) months of experience working with students or school-age children in a structured environment is required; experience with special education students is preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Positions in specialized language classifications require individuals who can speak and read (bilingual) or speak, read, and write (bilingual/biliterate) a second language as specified.

A valid First Aid Certificate, comparable to the American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate, and a Child and Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate are required for all positions.

Successful completion of up to 12 hours of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training is required during the probationary period.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employees in this classification work both indoors and outdoors, may be exposed to various conditions, and have direct contact with students and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees in this classification must be able to stand, walk, use fingers repetitively, use both hands simultaneously, stoop/bend, reach overhead, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. or over 50 lbs. with assistance, push/pull students of varying weights in wheelchairs, speak clearly, and hear normal voice conversations.

EXAMINATION:

OPEN/PROMOTIONAL WITH DUAL CERTIFICATION:

  • Bilingual evaluation (Ability to speak and read in Spanish)
  • Biliterate evaluation (Ability to read/write in Spanish)

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

PROOF OF EDUCATION:
If you received your education outside of the United States, you MUST have your degree/transcripts evaluated by an approved agency transcript evaluation service that certifies that your degree meets the United States equivalent for it to be considered.

ADVANCED SALARY STEP PLACEMENT:
New employees are typically placed at Step A of the appropriate salary range for this classification. If the hiring authority requests advanced salary step placement, the new employee's eligibility will be determined in accordance with Personnel Commission Rule and Regulation.

APPOINTMENT:
Candidates who pass all stages of the testing process will be placed on an eligibility list in rank order based on final scores. The top candidates ready to accept the position will be referred to the hiring administrator for interviews.

PROCESSING FEE:
New employees will be charged a processing fee for the cost of fingerprinting. This fee must be paid at the time of processing appointment, with a MONEY ORDER ONLY.

VETERANS CREDIT:
For entry-level classes, veterans with thirty (30) days or more of active service who obtain a passing score shall be allowed additional credit.

VACATION:
Employees earn vacation at the rate of one (1) day for each month in paid status for a maximum of 12 vacation days per year.

HOLIDAYS:
For twelve-month employees, paid holidays are earned each year.

SICK LEAVE:
One (1) day of sick leave is earned for each full month of service.

HEALTH INSURANCE:
Employees whose regular work assignment is thirty (30) hours or more per week are eligible to participate in the District's insurance program.

EDUCATIONAL STIPEND:
Employees with an earned Bachelor's or Master's degree beyond the requirements for their position are eligible for a stipend.

RETIREMENT:
Employees who work 20 hours or more per week will be enrolled in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
