Cardiac Exercise Specialist

Position Overview: The Exercise Physiologist in Non-Invasive Cardiology plays a crucial role in conducting diagnostic exercise stress tests, administering Holter monitors, and interpreting resting electrocardiograms.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurately verify patient identity using two approved identifiers.
- Provide patients with information regarding procedures and set expectations prior to testing.
- Prepare patients for assessments, ensuring proper electrode and ECG lead placement, and review patient history and medications before testing. Notify supervising physician of any contraindications or concerns.
- Conduct resting electrocardiograms.
- Administer and oversee clinical exercise stress tests, including treadmill stress exercises, pharmacologic stress testing, and components of nuclear stress tests and combination stress-echo testing.
- Document patient vitals, treadmill speed and grade, and all signs and symptoms during rest, exercise, and recovery accurately.
- Complete and submit all documentation for physician review in accordance with departmental guidelines.
- Administer, instruct patients, and manage Holter monitors.
- Alert physicians to any urgent signs and symptoms.
- Maintain and sanitize equipment following departmental protocols.
Physical and Sensory Requirements:
Ability to stand for the majority of an 8-hour shift, with the capacity to sit for up to 30 minutes for data entry and Holter monitor scanning. Occasional handling, grasping, twisting, and turning while assisting patients may be required. The role may involve lifting clients weighing up to 300 pounds with assistance and pushing clients in wheelchairs. Occasional stooping, bending, squatting, crouching, and reaching above shoulder level is necessary. Proficient tactile skills are essential for patient assessments, electrode attachment, and auscultation of heart and lungs. Auditory skills are needed for normal conversation, blood pressure evaluation, and auscultating heart and lung sounds. Visual acuity is required for both close-up and distant vision tasks. Finger dexterity and grasping skills are necessary for computer documentation and ECG electrode placement.
Education:
A Master of Science degree in Clinical Exercise Science or Exercise Physiology is required.
Training and Experience:
Clinical experience in cardiac testing, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, or a related field is essential. Certification as an ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) or CCI Certified Cardiographer Technician may be obtained within six months of hire, subject to the facility manager's discretion. BLS and ACLS certifications are required (the latter may be obtained post-hire). Proficiency in ECG rhythm recognition and 12-lead ECG interpretation is necessary. Attendance at annual case conferences and clinical supervision of exercise testing by non-physician healthcare professionals is mandatory.
