Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts research and drafts comprehensive coverage opinions and correspondence.
  • Analyzes facts, policy language, and applicable laws to create detailed and legally sound coverage opinions for claims teams nationwide.
  • Investigates current legal trends affecting insurance coverage and applies knowledge of state-specific issues.
  • Interprets various policy forms, including commercial general liability, business auto, commercial property, public entity errors & omissions, inland marine, auto dealers, and commercial umbrella policies.
  • Drafts coverage position letters.
  • Reviews non-complex draft coverage letters prepared by claims professionals and provides constructive feedback.
  • Offers coverage opinions and letters.
  • Addresses general coverage inquiries from claims professionals.
  • Organizes and prioritizes tasks to meet deadlines effectively.
  • Communicates coverage opinions to claims professionals.
  • Engages in peer review and collaboration.
  • Submits work for team review and feedback prior to finalizing coverage opinions and correspondence.
  • Considers all feedback to ensure that work products are legally sound, well-reasoned, consistent, and professionally articulated.
  • Reviews drafts from team members and provides timely, thoughtful, and constructive feedback.
  • Participates in team discussions regarding coverage issues and questions.
  • Delivers training on coverage issues.
  • Creates training presentations for claims professionals on various policy forms and endorsements, including state-specific coverage matters.
  • Participates in both in-person and virtual training sessions for claims professionals.
  • Collaborates with Underwriting.
  • Reviews proposed policy language and prepares memorandums for underwriting as necessary.
  • Addresses legal considerations and potential issues related to proposed forms and endorsements.
  • Identifies issues in existing policy language and discusses implications with underwriters and claims personnel as appropriate.
  • Engages in discussions about policy language while demonstrating an understanding of underwriting intent.
  • Aids in archiving and organizing work products and resources.
  • Participates in planning presentations.
  • Contributes to special projects related to the Coverage Counsel team's functions.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree.
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state.
  • A minimum of eight years of experience in insurance coverage analysis and/or coverage litigation.
  • Proficient in legal research and writing.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Extensive knowledge of coverage law and legal research.
  • Strong understanding of claims functions and insurance coverage.
  • Thorough knowledge of insurance contracts and legal procedures affecting liability across all commercial insurance lines.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid understanding of claims systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.

Compensation: As per the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the hiring range for this position for Colorado-based team members is $110,000 to $142,000. The hiring range for other locations may vary.
