Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-depth research and prepare written coverage opinions and correspondence.
  • Review and analyze facts, policy language, and research applicable laws to prepare detailed and legally supported coverage opinions for claims personnel nationwide.
  • Stay up-to-date on current legal trends impacting insurance coverage issues and implement knowledge of state-specific issues.
  • Analyze and interpret various policy forms, including commercial general liability policies, business auto policies, commercial property policies, public entity errors & omission policies, inland marine policies, auto dealers policies, and commercial umbrella policies.
  • Prepare draft coverage position letters and review non-complex draft coverage position letters prepared by claims professionals for claims and provide feedback.
  • Provide coverage opinions and letters, respond to general coverage questions from claims professionals, and communicate with claims professionals on coverage opinions.
  • Organize and prioritize projects to meet deadlines, submit work product for team/peer review and feedback, and consider and discuss all feedback to ensure work product is legally supported, well-reasoned, consistent, and professionally written.
  • Participate in team discussions on coverage issues/questions, prepare and present training on coverage issues, and collaborate with underwriting to review proposed policy language and prepare memorandums.
  • Assist in archiving and organizing work product and resources, participate in planning presentations, and serve on special projects related to the functions of the Coverage Counsel team.
Requirements
  • Juris Doctorate degree.
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state.
  • Eight years of experience focused on insurance coverage analysis and/or coverage litigation.
  • Experience in legal research and writing.
  • Excellent knowledge of coverage law and legal research, strong knowledge of the theory and practice of the claim function and insurance coverage, and excellent knowledge of insurance contracts and legal aspects of court procedures affecting legal liability for all commercial lines of insurance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, strong knowledge of claims systems, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
