POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Respiratory Therapist specializing in Neonatal Intensive Care is an advanced-level clinician dedicated to the management and support of pediatric and neonatal patients during critical care transport. This role requires close collaboration with the critical care transport nurse and medical control physician to ensure optimal patient care. Exceptional communication and customer service skills are essential as this clinician represents SwedishAmerican in various healthcare settings.

The primary responsibility of this position is to maintain the readiness of all Critical Care Transport Ambulance equipment and supplies. The Certified Respiratory Therapist will also contribute to the development of transport policies and procedures, as well as provide education and training to healthcare professionals both within SwedishAmerican and in surrounding community hospitals.

Major Responsibilities:

Deliver comprehensive patient care during inter-hospital transports in collaboration with team members. Complete patient assignments and ensure stabilization of transport patients. Prioritize tasks, adapting to changing patient conditions and taking action to mitigate risks based on urgent data. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, including interpretation of blood gases and lab values, management of mechanical ventilation, and administration of nitric oxide and continuous nebulizers. Represent SwedishAmerican to external healthcare facilities with outstanding communication and customer service. Assist in the creation or revision of transport policies and procedures, educational materials, and competencies. Engage in Outreach Education as necessary. Present and demonstrate basic pediatric assessments in simulated emergency scenarios. Participate in or conduct research as required. Provide orientation, education, and support to new staff regarding departmental services. Incorporate clinical practice standards and protocols to enhance clinical effectiveness. Utilize technology effectively to improve practice and care delivery efficiency. Implement practice protocols relevant to the patient population. Apply research findings in clinical practice. Initiate multidisciplinary collaboration to positively influence health outcomes. Support and enhance patient autonomy and self-determination in health-related decision-making. Maintain current knowledge and clinical expertise while fostering professional development for self and others.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

Minimum:

Graduate of a Commission of Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) Accredited Program for Respiratory Therapy. Two years of experience as a staff therapist, including work with neonatal and/or pediatric critical care patients.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Minimum:

Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) in the state of Illinois. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Basic Life Support/CPR Certification. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or ability to obtain within two years of hire. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Obtain Neonatal Pediatric Specialty (NPS) Certification within two years of employment.

Preferred:

Perinatal Pediatric Respiratory Care Practitioner.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to provide comprehensive critical care in the absence of a physician. Clinical expertise in patient assessment and monitoring. Proficiency in interpreting blood gases and lab values. Expertise in mechanical ventilation and administration of nitric oxide. Strong critical thinking skills. Ability to assess and provide appropriate care swiftly and accurately. Effective and professional communication skills with team members, medical staff, and families. Capacity to acquire and maintain advanced skills, including basic airway management. Ability to foster positive working relationships across departments. Sensitivity to the values of self and others. Flexibility with work schedules.
